Historical Description

COTTINGHAM is a parish and village, separated from Leicestershire by the river Welland, and is seated on a declivity which marks the termination of the lias and the commencement of the inferior oolite, 2 ½ miles south-west-by-west from Rockingham station on the Market Harborough and Peterborough branch of the London and North Western railway, and 3 miles north-west from Weldon station on the Kettering, Manton and Nottingham section of the Midland railway, 9 miles north from Kettering and 21 north-east-by-north from Northampton, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Corby, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Kettering, rural deanery of Weldon (first portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an ancient structure of inferior oolite stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, north transept, vestry and a western tower with pinnacles and an octagonal spire, and containing 5 bells: one of the Decorated columns of the north aisle arcade has a remarkable capital, carved with figures of two knights in armour, a lady and a bishop or mitred abbot, all placed horizontally round it: in 1880 the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of over £2,600, the chancel being entirely rebuilt and fitted with oak seats, a vestry and transept added, the nave roof renewed, the pews removed and the nave supplied with chairs; a new organ was at the same time placed in the transept; and in 1890 a western porch was added: there are sittings for 385 persons. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a rectory, yearly value £414, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Principal and Fellows of Brasenose College, Oxford, and held since 1866 by the Rev. William Yates M.A. formerly fellow of that college, rural dean of Weldon (first portion), honorary canon of Peterborough, proctor in Convocation, and chaplain to the Bishop of Peterborough. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here, built in 1878, and a Congregational chapel at Middleton, built in 1808. The reading room, opened in 1885, is supplied with the daily and other papers and periodicals. A supply of excellent water derived from springs adjacent to the village is carried throughout this and the adjoining township of Middleton in iron pipes, with drinking fountains at intervals; the pipes were laid down at the expense of the copyholders in the year 1854.

The charities include the rent of 18 acres, left by William Downhall, in 1760, for keeping in repair a portion of the church, the overplus being given to the poor of Cottingham and Middleton; this land now produces about £26 yearly, which is chiefly distributed in fuel; and the rent of 1a. 1r. 39p. left by William Riddell, is for apprenticing poor children, subject to such charges as may be necessary for keeping his tomb and others of bis family in repair: there are also several small sums at interest for the benefit of the poor, now (1898) producing about £3 10s. a year. A house for leprous persons is said to have been maintained here in the time of Henry HI. Bury House, the residence of Mrs. Bigge is a modern mansion standing in small grounds adjoining the village. The copyholders are lords of the manor and hold their court annually on the first Thursday after the 11th October. Edmund Henry Cokayne Pery Knox Gore esq. the Rev. Sir Lewis H. Palmer bart. M.A. of East Carlton Hall, Sir Arthur Richard de Capell-Brooke bart. J.P. of Great Oakley Hall, and George Lewis Watson esq. D.L., J.P. of Rockingham Castle, are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy clay and limestone; subsoil, ironstone; it is chiefly a grazing district, but yields heavy crops of Wheat. The area is 1,723 acres; rateable value, £3,185; the population in 1891 was 598 in the civil, and 949 in the ecclesiastical parish.
