Historical Description

Dallington, the church of which contains several handsome monuments commemorative of the Raynsford family. About one mile beyond this place we arrive at Northampton.

DALLINGTON is a parish, 1 ¼ miles north-west from Northampton stations on the London and North Western and Midland railways, on the road to Rugby, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Nobottle Grove, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Northampton, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel with north chapel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a low embattled western tower containing 5 bells and a clock: the chancel retains a piscina, aumbry and a leper’s window, and there is also a piscina in the south aisle: the church was restored and reseated with open oak benches in 1880, from designs by Messrs. E. W. Law and Son, architects, Northampton: in 1883 the chancel was thoroughly restored at the sole expense of Earl Spencer K.G. from designs by Mr. Edmund Law, when a new reredos of stone, with figures of the Apostles, was erected and an organ introduced at the cost of the late Mrs. H. B. Whitworth, of Dallington Hall, who also presented the church clock in 1887: there are several inscribed floor stones to the Raynsford family, dating from 1679; and including a marble monument to Sir Richard Raynsford kt. Chief Justice of the King's Bench (1676—9), who died here 17 Feb. 1679, and two mural monuments of marble to Joseph Jekyll esq. ob. 1752, and his wife Lady Ann Jekyll, second daughter of George (Montagu) Earl of Halifax; she died in 1766: there are three memorial windows to Henry Billington Whitworth esq. d. 20 Sept. 1877, and one erected in 1893 to the Rev. Christopher Cookson B.D. vicar here, 1863—74: there are 230 sittings. The register dates from the year 1577. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £360, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Spencer K.G., P.C. and held since 1874 by the Rev. Thomas Calvert Beasley M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. A cemetery of two acres was formed in 1878, and is under the control of a burial board of 5 members. There are four almshouses for four poor persons, erected and endowed by Sir Richard Raynsford kt. with a rent-charge producing about £27 8s. yearly: Joseph Jekyll Rye left the sum of £450, reduced after payment of legacy duty to £405, which sum has been invested in Government securities, and the interest, £11 5s. 4d. yearly, is distributed to the four inhabitants of Sir Richard Raynsford’s almshouses, who each receive 3s. 6d. per week and 10s. at Whitsuntide. In 1897 a sum of £100 in 3 per Cent. India Stock was given, as an addition to the income of the almshouse fund, by J. Shuttleworth esq. of Dallington. A floral and horticultural society was revived here in 1883. Earl Spencer K.G. in 1897, gave a piece of land for a recreation ground, in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Dallington House, the residence of the Right Hon. Charles Robert Spencer P.C., J.P, D.L, is a plain mansion of stone adjoining the church, Earl Spencer K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is marl and clay; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, market garden produce and grass. Under the provisions of section 36 of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the old parish of Dallington has been divided into two civil parishes, named respectively Dallington and Dallington St. James. The area of the old parish was 1,518 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value of the new parish, £5,197; the population in 1891 was 2,233, of which 1,979 is in the district of St. James, and comprises St. James’ End, partly in this parish and partly in that of Duston; the names are given under Northampton.

The parish is included in the United School Board district of Duston, Duston St. James & Dallington & Dallington St. James, formed 25 Aug. 1871.

The Northamptonshire Domestic Economy School, in the Avenue, was established in 1896 by the County Council, for 30 girls, who are boarded & receive instruction in dressmaking, cookery & laundry work, needlework, general housework & the elementary principles of health.

National School (mixed), built about 1840 & enlarged 1893, for 117 children; average attendance, 59.
