Historical Description

The village of Ecton: in the parish of which is Ecton-house, the seat of Samuel Isted, esq. The house is a handsome modern stone building, surrounded by pleasant plantations, and grounds of a diversified appearance.

ECTON is a parish and village, prettily situated near the road from Northampton to Wellingborough, bounded on the south by the river Nene, which, divides it from Cogenhoe and Whiston, about 2 miles north from the Billing Road station on the Northampton and Peterborough branch of the London and North Western railway, 5 south-west-by-west from Wellingborough, and 5 east-north-east from Northampton; it is in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Hamfordshoe, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wellingborough, rural deanery of Rothwell (first portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is a building of stone, in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with angle turrets, containing 6 bells and a clock with chimes: at the east end of the north aisle is a piscina: and there are the remains of a rood loft: at the east end of the south aisle is a chapel with several mural tablets and a marble monument to the Isted family: the chancel contains memorials to the Palmer and Whalley families, and a blacksmith, an ancestor of Benjamin Franklin, is buried in the churchyard: in 1890 an organ chamber and vestry were erected, and new choir stalls and an organ provided: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £570, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1849 by the Rev. Charles Tizard Davies B.A. of Queens' College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel, rebuilt in 1839, seat 100 persons; the Baptist chapel, erected about 1829, has 100 sittings. Charities:-Palmer’s, consisting of 8 acres of land producing £10 yearly, is for education; Catesbys, amounting to about £33 10s. yearly, derived from stock and the rent of 12 acres of land, is for education, apprenticing and for doles of bread; Whalley’s of £4 11s. 8d. the interest of certain stock, is for distribution in bread, and Barker’s, of £2, the rent of 1 acre of land, is for clothing. Ecton Hall, the seat of Major-Gen. Frederick Edward Sotheby F.Z.S., J.P. lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a stone mansion, supposed to occupy the site of a monastic house; it is charmingly situated on rising ground and commands a fine view over an extensive vale of pasture. The soil is light loam and gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, pulse and root. The area is 2,291 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £4,029; the population in 1891 was 572.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Sept. 25, 1874; Willan Jackson, Oxford street, Wellingborough, clerk to the board; Francis Green, Earls Barton, attendance & inquiry officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1876, at a cost of £2,000, including site, for 175 children; average attendance, 125; there is a house for the master.
