Historical Description
FAXTON is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles east from Lamport station on the Northampton and Market Harborough section of the London and North Western railway, and 10 north from Northampton, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Orlngbury, petty sessional division of Kettering, union of Brixworth, county court district of Northampton, rural deanery of Rothwell (third portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Denis is a plain and low building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, and a bell-cote on the western gable containing 2 bells: it contains a fine monument to Sir Augustine Nichols kt. justice of the Common Pleas and Chancellor to Charles, Prince of Wales, afterwards Charles I.; he was born at Ecton in 1559, and was sometime resident here, but died August 3rd, 1616, whilst on the summer circuit at Kendal, in the parish church of which he was buried and where there is another monument to him, restored in 1815, and bearing a similar inscription. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a chapelry annexed to the rectory of Lamport, joint yearly value £430, including 40 acres of glebe here and 60 at Lamport, with residence, in the gift of Sir Charles E. Isham bart. of Lamport, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Henry Vere Packe B.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford and rural dean of Rothwell, who resides at Lamport. Sir Herbert Hay Langham bart. of Cottesbrooke, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is principally pasture land and farmed chiefly by the inhabitants of other parishes. The parish contains 1,850 acres; rateable value, £2,035; the population in 1891 was 46.
