Historical Description

HAZLEBEECH (or Haselbeech) is a parish and village 4 miles west from Lamport station on the Northampton and Market Harborough section of the North Western railway, 12 north-north-west from Northampton, 13 west from Kettering, 5 south-east from Welford, 8 ½ south from Market Harborough, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Rothwell, petty sessional division of Little Bowden, union of Brixworth, county court district of Market Harborough, rural deanery of Rothwell (third portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1860 at a cost of £1,100, the old oak benches being preserved and new open benches of a similar character provided: in 1869 the tower was repaired and the bells re-hung at a further cost of £210: the large organ was the gift of Selina, late Viscountess Milton, who married, as her second husband, the late George Savile Foljambe esq. of Osberton, Notts: in 1872 a mortuary chapel with a crypt or vault, designed by Mr. A. Salvin, was built at the north-east angle of the church, and contains an altar-tomb of alabaster and marble, with recumbent figures, by William Calder Marshall esq. R.A. of a lady and child, to the memory of Louisa Blanche (Howard), wife of Cecil George Savile Foljambe esq. M.P. (now Lord Hawkesbury), and her infant; she died in 1871: the chancel is separated from the church by a wrought iron screen: the oldest monument in this church, dated 1661, is to a member of the Wykes family, and there are others to the same name: the chancel was rebuilt in 1881, by the Rev. Canon Bury B.A. late rector, at a cost of about £800, and the carving, executed by Mr. Forsyth, was completed at a cost of £300, defrayed by Elizabeth Pym: the churchyard is beautifully kept and adorned with flowers. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1653; marriages, 1695. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £251, including 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Hawkesbury, and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Arnold Shaw M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. There is a charity consisting of a rent-charge of £3 yearly, which is distributed in bread. Hazlebeech Hall, the, property of Lord Hawkesbury, and now in the occupation of Mrs. Middleton, is a building of stone in various styles of architecture, situated in park-like grounds near the church. Lord Hawkesbury, Sir Charles Edmund Isham bart. D.L, of Lamport Hall, the trustees of the Clipston charity and the Winstanley Trustees are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, mixed. The land is chiefly pasture, the arable crops being wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,653 acres; rateable value, £2,000; the population in 1891 was 171.

Parochial School (mixed), built, with residence for teacher, in 1872, by the Dowager Viscountess Milton, at a cost of £600, for 50 children; average attendance, 22.

The children of this parish have the privilege of attending the Free school at Clipston.
