Historical Description

HELIDON (or Hellidon) is a village and parish on the borders of Warwickshire, 4 miles north from Byfield station on the East and West Junction railway, 5 south-west from Daventry and 14 north-east-by-north from Banbury, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Fawsley, petty sessional division, union, comity court district and rural deanery of Daventry, archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The village occupies a very sequestered site in a hilly district, affording beautiful views of the surrounding country. The river Leam rises in this parish and being joined by other tributary springs, flows to Leamington, below which town it joins the river Avon. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, with aisle (erected in 1897, as a memorial of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee), nave, north aisle, vestry on the north side, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells and a clock: the church was thoroughly repaired in 1847 and in 1867 it was enlarged and decorated and a north aisle added: a credence table of oak has been presented by the Rev. G. F. L. Davis M.A. curate here, 1868—77; the reredos is of white freestone inlaid with marble: the chancel retains sedilia: the east and west windows are stained and on the south side of the chancel are two others, erected in memory of Fanny Lee, d. 4 March, 1876; an organ was provided in 1896: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1571.

The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £93, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Edwin Hermus Holthouse esq. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Samuel Hail Marriott L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham, and chaplain of Oates by Abbey chapel. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. Charities: The Rev. Longton Freeman, sometime vicar of this parish, bequeathed in 1783 the interest of £20 yearly for the poor; John Ball esq. left in 1618 the sum of £20 yearly for a schoolmaster to teach the youth of the parish; the Rev. Sir John Knightley bart. bequeathed in 1813 two-thirds of £200 in aid of a Sunday school. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Sir George Shuckburgh bart. Henry A. Attenborough esq. of Catesby, who is lord of the manor, and Frederick Canning esq. The soil is a red loam: subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and oats. The area is 1,660 acres; rateable value, £2,436; the population in 1891 was 290.

Endowed School (mixed), built, with master’s house attached, in 1854, enlarged in 1885 at a cost of £84, and a class room added in 1894; it will hold 72 children; average attendance, 70; & supported in part by endowment of £20 yearly, derived from the rent of two farms, left by John Ball esq. in 1618.
