Historical Description

HOLCOT is a village and parish, near the road from Northampton to Kettering, 4 miles east from Spratton station on the London and North Western railway, 8 south-west, from Kettering, 8 north-west from Wellingborough and 7 north-east from Northampton, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Hamfordshoe, petty sessional division and county court district of Northampton, union of Brixworth, rural deanery of Rothwell (third portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Mary and All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Decorated style, with Early English and Perpendicular insertions, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a small embattled western tower containing 3 bells and a clock: the chancel contains a piscina: the stained east window, erected by the Rev. R. Montgomery M.A., rector, 1825—81, is a memorial to Jane, his wife, who died in 1878; the west window of the south aisle is also a memorial, erected by the present rector to his daughter, Mary Louisa, d. 23 April, 1884; in the same aisle is a memorial window to his sister and another stained window: in 1845 the chancel was restored, the roof being raised and a vestry built: a communion table cloth and hangings, together with cloths for the pulpit, desk and lectern, were presented at Easter, 1885, by the ladies of the St. Alphege Society, of Reigate, Surrey, and in 1889 an oak lectern and prayer desk with carved front were added: the carved oak pulpit was erected in 1897 as a memorial of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, yearly value £200, with residence, in the joint gift of Miss Montgomery and Mrs. Watts-Manning, and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Gooch M.A., of Caius College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel here. The charities amount to £12 yearly, £5 of which are derived from the poor’s land, bequeathed by various donors, and is given away in sums of money. The church land, now (1898) let for about £11 a year, is devoted to church repairs and other expenses. Lord Wantage K.C.B, V.C. who is lord of the manor, Miss Montgomery, Mrs. Watts-Manning, Mrs. G. Daniels, the Rector, Messrs. James Houghton, E, M. Browne and John Drage, the representatives of the late R. Ekins, and Lincoln College, Oxford, are the principal landowners. The soil is a red loam; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and grass. The area is 1,399 acres; rateable value, £1,685; and the population in 1891 was 341.
