The village of Oxendon Magna, the church of which is remarked by Moreton, for its echo returning to the west part of the hill, near 700 feet off, thirteen syllables, but on the south side fewer.

GREAT OXENDON is a parish and village, three quarters of a mile from Clipston station on the Northampton and Market Harborough branch of the North Western railway, 2 ½ south-east from Market Harborough, 14 north-west from Northampton and 11 north-west from Kettering, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Rothwell, petty sessional division of Little Bowden, union and county court district of Market Harborough, rural deanery of Rothwell (second portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Helen, on the brow of the bill, a quarter of a mile from the village, is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the north porch is used as a vestry. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1597; marriages and burials, 1564. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. William Sackville Parker M.A. of Rothwell, and held since 1892 by the Right Rev. and Ven. Francis Henry Thicknesse D.D. of Brasenose College, Oxford, Bishop suffragan of Leicester, Archdeacon of Northampton and Canon Residentiary of Peterborough. Here is a chapel, principally used by the Baptists. Oxendon Hall is the residence of William Henry Barfoot-Saunt esq. J.P. Thomas Tertius Paget (a minor) of Humberstone, Leicester, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is a very rich loam; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly pasture. The area is 1,352 acres; assessable value, £3,021; the population in 1891 was 213.

National School (mixed), formerly for 45 children, was enlarged in 1894 to hold 70 children; average attendance, 52; the boys of this parish have also the privilege of attending the Free Grammar School at Clipston.
