Historical Description

The small village of Pitsford, near which is a sepulchral tumulus, known by the name of Longman’s Hill; and on a heath near the village is a small encampment, called Barrow Dykes, the circumvallation of which was anciently of a square form; but only two sides remain, one of which is about 80 yards in length. In this parish is Pitsford-hall, a respectable modern building, consisting of a centre and two wings; it has been occupied for some years by Colonel Corbett.

PITSFORD is a parish, near the road from Northampton to Market Harborough, 1 mile north east from Brampton station on the Northampton and Market Harboro’ section of the London and North Western railway and 5 north from Northampton, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Spelhoe, union of Brixworth, petty sessional division and county court district of Northampton, rural deanery of Haddon (second portion), archdeaconry of Northampton and diocese of Peterborough. The church of All Saints, situated on a knoll at the north-west corner of the village and embowered with elms, is a building of stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, with portions of Norman and Perpendicular work, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle with chapel, south aisle, south porch and a massive western tower of Early English date, with plain parapet and low pinnacles and containing 5 bells, rehung in 1888 at a cost of £113; one of the bells is dated 1633 and another 1693: the inner doorway of the porch is a rich specimen of the Early Norman style and has a rudely sculptured tympanum, representing the conflict of Faith with the Evil Principle: the Decorated font has a curious panelled projection on one side, pierced with three holes: the north chantry retains a sepulchral arch and piscina: the church was restored in 1866 and affords 300 sittings.

The register of marriages dates from the year 1560; baptisms, 1560; burials, 1751. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £280, including 194 acres of glebe, in the gift of Howard Henry Howard-Vyse esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. John White M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel here. The Earl of Strafford's charity of £5 yearly is for fuel. Howard Henry Howard. Vyse esq. who is lord of the manor, Lord Wantage K.C.B., V.C. and the rector are the principal landowners. The soil is marl and clay; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and grass. The area is 1,413 acres; rateable value, £3,020; the population in 1891 was 508.

National School (mixed), built about 1846, for 126 children; average attendance, 70; & there is a house for the master attached.
