ANCROFT is a parish and village pleasantly seated on the high road from Berwick to Wooler, 6 miles south from Berwick, 10 north-west from Belford and 4 west from Windmill station on the main line of the North Eastern railway. The parish extends to the German Ocean, and comprises the villages and hamlets of Ancroft, East and West Allerdean, Cheswick and Haggerston, in the Berwick-on-Tweed division of the county, Norham and Islandshire petty sessional division, Berwick union and county court district, rural deanery of Norham, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Anne, supposed to have been erected about the year 1090, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a western tower with small flat-topped pinnacles at the angles, and a bell-cote on the roof containing 2 bells, one of which was taken from a Wesleyan chapel in London, when it was demolished: the tower was originally built as a pele tower: the church was restored in 1870, when the nave was lengthened, the chancel rebuilt and a vestry added at the north-west angle: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1743. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £236, net yearly value £314, including 85 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1885 by the Rev. The English Presbyterian church at Ancroft North Moor was erected in 1845 and restored in 1886: there are 220 sittings: adjoining is a manse with extensive grounds. There are two small charities, together amounting to about £4 yearly. Ancroft is said to have been at one period a place of some importance; the foundations of several houses have been discovered in an adjoining field, and it is supposed that a company of army shoe makers resided here in the reign of Queen Anne. M.G., J.P. of Cheswick House, and Henry Himsworth esq. of Broom House, are the chief landowners. The soil is of a loamy nature; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 9,941 acres of land, 17 of water and 435 of foreshore; rateable value, £20,836; the population in 1891 was 1,526.
