Historical Description

The village of Bothal, are the remains of an ancient baronial castle, formerly belonging to the younger branch of the Bertrams, barons of Mitford, but now in the possession of the Duke of Portland. The castle is most delightfully situated on an eminence, near the north bank of the river Wansbeck. Its present remains consist of the great gateway, which was Hanked on the north side by two polygonal towers, 53 feet high; and on the south-west angle by a square turret, whose height measured 60 feet. Adjoining to this gate are some outer walls, enclosing an area of an irregular figure, measuring about a quarter of an acre; within which are some scattered fragments of the inner apartments. Over the centre of the gate on the north side is an escutcheon of the arms of England, with six others, three on each side, and on the north-east face of the westernmost tower are four more, all supposed to be those of the ancient barons, its former proprietors. The south front of the gate is beautifully mantled with ivy. Northwest of this building was another tower, part of whose walls now support a cottage.

Near the old castle is the parochial church; which has three handsome aisles, the pulpit is placed against the north pillar entering the chancel. The lights are neat, and part of them adorned with paintings. At the east end of the south aisle is a handsome tomb of alabaster, inclosed with iron rails, erected to the memory of one of the barons of Ogle and Bothal, and his lady.

In a shady solitude, on the banks of the Wansbeck near Bothal, are the ruins of an ancient chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is 24 feet in length, and 12 in breadth. It was built by the Ogle family, of free-stone; the roof being formed in a curious manner of the same materials; but the remains of this chapel are now scarcely visible for trees, which have taken root in the very foundations.

About one mile to the east of Bothal is Ashington, once a manor of the barony of Bothal; it stands on an eminence well sheltered with tall forest trees, and has a beautiful view of the sea, and also of Seaton Delaval, and Bebside, through the openings of the plantations, the ground sloping regularly to a plantation of oaks situated by the river Wansbeck. Below this is a fine grass area of a mile in length, the river during that space forming a most beautiful canal, and having on the opposite side a bank of oaks.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOTHAL (or Bothal Demesne) is a parish, township and small but pleasant village, delightfully seated on the beautifully wooded northern bank of the river Wansbeck, 2 miles from Longhurst station on the main line of the North Eastern railway and 3 east from Morpeth, in the Wansbeck division of the county, Morpeth ward, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Morpeth, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Andrew is an edifice of stone, originally in the Lancet style, of which the chancel remains, but was almost entirely remodelled in the Perpendicular period, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, and a square turret rising above the western gable and partly supported by a tall buttress on the west front; it contains 3 bells, one of which is dated 1615: in the chancel are three cusped sedilia and a piscina and at the south-east angle a low side window; on the south side is also a priests’ dooorway with equilateral cusped arch and sides enriched with the ball ornament: in the nave floor, on the north side of the chancel arch, lies a large moulded slab, about 7 feet long, bearing a quatrefoil-headed cross and some other carvings, and against the opposite side of the arch is an altar-tomb, with effigies in alabaster of a knight in armour and wearing a chain and pendent cross, and a lady in a long robe covered by a mantle; her head Tests on a pillow, supported by figures, and by her is a greyhound; these effigies are considered to represent Ralph, 3rd baron Ogle, ob. 1512 and Margaret (Gascoigne), his wife, and at one angle of the tomb is a shield charged with a lion and a monkey, the latter being chained by the waist: in the north-east angle of the north aisle is a singular recess, set diagonally and widening inwards: the windows of the aisles retain some ancient and beautiful stained glass of the 14th century, including the impaled arms of Ellen, daughter and heir of Sir Robert Bertram kt. and wife, first of Robert Ogle, lord of Bothal, and subsequently, in 1396, of David Holgrave, who, with his wife, founded a chantry here; this glass also comprises a group of the “Annunciation,” the instruments of the Passion, and the badge of the Ogle family, a rose en soleil: the oak roofs of the nave and aisles are of Perpendicular date, the former being enriched with figures of angels bearing shields: in 1887 the chancel was restored and refloored with wood blocks, and is now seated with chairs: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £1,098, gross yearly value £1,218, with residence at Sheepwash and about 106 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Portland P.C. and held since 1861 by the Rev. the Hon William Charles Ellis M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. There are charities of £2 yearly value bequeathed to the poor of Bothal by the Rev. Mr. Stafford, rector of Bothal in the year 1716, and a school charity of £2 16s. yearly. Bothal Castle, which stands upon a green knoll adjacent to the church and on the north bank of the river, is still an imposing monument of feudal grandeur; on the south side the site rises to the summit of a lofty rock, whose base is washed by the liver; the east and west sides have at one time been defended by a moat: the wood forming the background slopes to the water’s edge, here and there skirted by picturesque rocks, and in many places the trees overhang the stream, which breaks against huge stones scattered throughout its channel: Robert Bartram, who held this place in the reign of Edward III. obtained licence in the 17th of that king (1343-4) to crenellated or fortify the mansion, and the structure, as a castle, may date from that period: the gatehouse, still standing, and now a dwelling house, has polygonal towers and grooves for a portcullis: over the north entrance are a number of shields of arms, including the royal shield of the Plantagenets: on the battlements are two stone figures of a horn blower and a man hurling a stone: the other remaining portions of the fabric, chiefly fragmentary, are comprised in an area of about half an acre: in the woods are the remains of an ancient chapel of “Our Lady.” The river abounds with fish. This place is resorted to by picnic parties. The Duke of Portland P.C. is lord of the barony by descent from the Ogles, through the Cavendish and Ogle families, and holds his court once in three years, and is the owner of almost the whole parish. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips, and seeds. The area of Bothal Demesne township is 3,161 acres of land and 33 of water and tidal water; rateable value, £21,910; the population in 1891 was 5,426, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 2,126.

Choppington North farm has lately been added for ecclesiastical purposes to Bothal.

School (mixed), for 300 children; average attendance, 285.
