Historical Description

The village of Carham, pleasantly situated on the banks of the Tweed, and surrounded with several plantations of young forest trees; at the west end of this village was formerly an abbey of black canons, subordinate to the priory of Kirkham, in Yorkshire.

On the south side of the village is a small hamlet, situated on a hill called Shidlaw, a contraction of Shield Law. It was formerly a guard-hill, and exploratory camp, and from it is an extensive and beautiful prospect into Scotland.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CARHAM is a township, parish and village on the road from Berwick to Kelso, near the Tweed, with a station (which is in Scotland), 1 ½ miles south-east, on the Kelso branch of the North Eastern railway, 17 miles south-west from Berwick-upon-Tweed and 17 north-west from Wooler, in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, west division of Glendale ward, Glendale union, Wooler county court district, Norham and Islandshire petty sessional division, rural deanery of Norham, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Cuthbert, occupying a commanding situation close to the bank of the river Tweed, was erected in 1791, from designs by R. Hodgson Huntley esq. of Carham Hall, and is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the stained east window was presented in 1870 by Mrs. Hodgson-Huntley and Mrs. Hodgson-Hinde: in the south aisle is a memorial window to the late Mrs. Catherine Compton and another in the north aisle to the late Compton Thornhill, and there are various memorials to the Comptons and one to the Rev, William Compton Lundie M.A. vicar, d. 1843: the octagonal font of stone was presented by the Rev. John King, a former vicar: in 1870 the church was enlarged by the addition of a chancel, with vestry on the north side and a western tower, and has 120 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1684; marriages and burials, 1690. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £230, net yearly value £216, including 5 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Hodgson-Hinde, and held since 1894 by the Rev. John Farnworth Anderson M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Near the church are the remains of a monastery of Black Canons, founded as a cell to the priory of Kirkham, Yorkshire, temp. Edward I. Here, in 1018, a severe encounter took place between the English, under Uitred, and the Scots, led by their king, Malcolm II. in which the English force was almost annihilated. In 1370 Sir John Lilburn was defeated near this place by the Scots, under Sir John Gordon, who were then returning from a marauding incursion with many prisoners and a great train of cattle. Near to the village is a small streamlet called the March Burn, which here flows into the Tweed, and forms lor a short distance, the line of demarcation between the two kingdoms; the railway station is placed at this spot on the Scotch border. Carham Hall, the seat of Mrs. Hodgson-Huntley, a short distance from the village, is a modern Elizabethan mansion of stone within a park on the banks of the Tweed. The Earl of Tankerville P.C. who is lord of the manor, Earl Grey K.G., P.C., G.C.M.G. Sir John de Marie Haggerston, of Ellingham Hall, Mrs. Hodgson-Huntley, Mrs. Hodgson-Hinde and the Marquess of Waterford K.P., P.C. are the chief landed proprietors. The soil is loamy and of very superior quality; the subsoil, principally clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas, turnips and mangold-wurzel. The area is 10,608 acres of land and 104 of water; rateable value, £16,090; the population in 1891 was 1,043.

The children of this place attend the school at Wark.
