Historical Description
CHATTON is a township, village and parish, on the river Till, in a pleasant valley, 4 ½ miles north-east from Ilderton station on the Alnwick and Cornhill branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 south-west from Belford and 5 east from Wooler; it is in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county and in the Glendale ward petty sessional division and union, Wooler county court district, rural deanery of Bamburgh, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of the Holy Cross is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles and a western belfry, containing one bell: the stained east window is a memorial to Allan Wilkie, of Hetton, d. Feb. 2, 1836, and there are others erected by the parishioners and friends to Algernon, 4th Duke of Northumberland K.G. to the Rev. Joseph Cook M.A. 43 years vicar, and to the Rev. Matthew Burrell, for 25 years vicar here: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1713. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £414, net yearly value £380, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Northumberland K.G. and held since 1871 by the Rev. Henry Edward Bell B.A. of University College, Oxford. There is a Presbyterian church, erected in 1850, and seating 450 persons. There are several limestone quarries in the neighbourhood. Fowberry Tower, the residence of Arthur Hugo Leather esq. J.P. a structure originally of the 15th century and built for defence, was converted into a residence in 1660: the rear part is still embattled; it stands in a park of 150 acres, containing some exceptionally fine trees. The Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clayey and sandy; the subsoil, limestone and rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips; there is much pasture land. The area is 17,267 acres of land and 68 of water; rateable value, £13,157; the population in 1891 was 1,145. The parish includes Coldmartin, Fowberry, 1 ½ miles south-west, Hazelrigg 4 miles north, Hetton 2 miles north, on the Hetton Burn, Hetton House 1 ¾ miles north and Horton 3 miles north-west, Lyham, or Lyam, is a small hamlet, 4 miles west from Belford station and 6 north-east from Wooler; it consists of a few farms only.
