Historical Description

The village of Chollerton, remarkable for a victory obtained by Oswald, king of Northumberland, over the British usurper, Cedwall, who had slain his apostate brother, Anfred, king of Bernicia, in a pitched battle. In commemoration of this victory a cross was erected at this place by Oswald, and which still bears his name. The held of battle, which is situated to the east of the village, has been since called Haledon, near which is a neat modern structure of white tree-stone, called Hallington Hall, the seat of C. Soulsby, Esq. a mile and a hail east from which is a hill with a square entrenchment, called the Mote Law, which implies the hill for observing the motions of an enemy, and giving an alarm by fire on any imminent danger.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CHOLLERTON is a parish, on the road between Hexham and Alnwick, having the Erring Burn on the south-east and the North Tyne river to the west, with a station on the North British railway, 285 miles from London, 5 ¾ from Hexham and about 23 west-north-west from Newcastle, in the Hexham division of the county, north-eastern division of Tindale ward, Hexham union and county court district, Tynedale petty sessional division, rural deanery of Bellingham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Giles, originally dating from a very early period, has been altered at different times till, with the exception of the nave arcades, its original character has been almost entirely lost: the church consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower, heightened by the addition of a belfry stage and containing one bell: it has been effectively restored since 1873, as much as possible of the ancient structure being retained: the unsightly modern windows have been removed and replaced by others in the later Early English style: all the windows in the nave and chancel are stained: in the church is a Roman altar, dedicated to Jupiter, but some centuries ago reversed and transformed into a Christian font: there are 184 sittings. The register dates from the year 1647. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £467; average, £359; gross yearly value £374, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1867 by the Rev. Christopher Bird B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and hon. canon of Newcastle. One coal pit is being worked. Sir John Swinburne bart. J.P. of Capheaton, who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. John Giffard Riddell esq. J.P. of Felton Park, Hugh Taylor esq. J.P. of Chipchase Castle, and the vicar are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey and loamy; the subsoil is grit, intersected by whinstone. The chief crops are wheat and turnips. The area of the entire parish is 14,240 acres; rateable value, £16,636; the population in 1891 was 1,097.
