Historical Description

Corbridge, an ancient borough, formerly called Curia Ottodinorum, or the Court of the Northumbrians. It is situated on the north bank of the Tyne, crossed by a bridge of seven arches. — This manor was anciently granted by the crown to Robert Clavering, Baron of Warkworth, with the privileges of sending two members to parliament, having an annual fair, and a weekly market; all which have been long disused. The church is an ancient structure dedicated to St. Andrew; on the south side of in is an old tower, formerly used as the town gaol, near which was the market cross.

In Match 1735, a huge piece of Roman plate was found in an inclosure on the south side of this town, by the river Tyne It was discovered in a boggy place by a little girl belonging to a smith, who was at play with more children. The raised work and figures upon it induced the children to carry it home to the smith, who perceiving it to be a thing of value took care of it, and carried it to Newcastle, where he sold it to a goldsmith of that town; but the Duke of Somerset hearing of it, he, as lord of the manor, claimed it as his property. It weighs 146 ounces, and measures 20 inches long, and 15 broad; it is hollowed about an inch deep, with a flat brim, an inch and a quarter broad, neatly flowered with a vine, grapes, &c. Under the middle of it was a low frame; about seven inches long, four broad, and one and a half deep. The ingenious Roger Gale, Esq. of Newcastle has given a particular account of this curious piece of antiquity.

Two famous altars, with Greek inscriptions, were likewise found in Corbridge church-yard; one in honour of the Tyrian Hercules, dedicated to Diadora the Priestess; it is large, and hollow at the top as usual for incense. The other is in honour of the Syrian goddess, Astarte, and is thus read by the learned Stukely: "Marcus Escrast, the son of Acheram, dedicates this altar to Astarte. ’’ He supposes these names to be Syrian, Arabic, or Punic. Marcus the Prenomen, to be adoptive to Romanize; and that he is the priest who set up the altar. That of Hercules was published by Mr. Horsley, who esteemed it one of the greatest curiosities of the kind in Britain.

Corbridge is a large, populous, and well built village, and consists, according to the late returns, of 215 houses, and 1032 inhabitant, viz 501 males, and 531 females, of whom 195 were returned as being employed in trade and manufacture.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CORBRIDGE is a parish, township and village, on the river Tyne, with a station (on the opposite bank of the river) on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway, 16 miles west from Newcastle-on-Tyne, 3 ½ east from Hexham and 280 from London, in the Hexham division of the county, Tynedale petty sessional division, east division of Tindale ward, union and county court district of Hexham, rural deanery of Corbridge, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. Corbridge is a place of great antiquity, and in 1295 returned two members to Parliament, being then much more extensive than it now is; it still, however, consists of several wide and open streets, occupying an elevated position on the northern bank of the river Tyne, over which is a fine stone bridge of seven arches, erected in 1674. A plentiful supply of water, derived from the adjoining hills, is constantly flowing from conduits erected at different points in the village, and water is also supplied from Shaw Well, miles from the village, by the rural sanitary authority. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient cruciform edifice of stone, built from the materials of the Roman station adjacent, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transepts and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells and a clock: the nave is separated from the aisles by Pointed arches, supported by octangular columns having plain capitals: the chancel was completely restored in 1857 and the church restored and reseated in 1868: it has 623 sittings. The register commences in the year 1657. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £354, gross yearly value £400, with 21 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Francis Richardson M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, seating 300 persons, and Primitive and Free Methodist chapels, each affording 150 sittings. A cemetery, consisting of about 2 acres, was formed in 1871: there are two mortuary chapels: it is under the control of a Burial Board of 5 members. The Town Hall, erected 1887, at a cost of £2,000, is a stone building in the English Renaissance style, and comprises a hall holding 500 persons, and reading and recreation rooms. Here is also a Reading room with a library of 1,000 volumes. The market cross was erected in 1814 by Hugh, 2nd Duke of Northumberland; no market is, however, now held. There are brick works in the place, but otherwise the village is purely agricultural. The soil of the valley of the Tyne in this locality is extremely rich, producing abundant crops, and a quantity of land is under cultivation as market gardens. A great cattle fair is held at Stagshawe Bank, a moor 2 miles north from the village, on Whit-Saturday and July 4. A tryst fair is held on October 24 and November 25. At one corner of the market place stands a massive pele tower, built during the reign of Edw. II. and remarkable for the perfect condition of the interior, which exhibits in a complete manner the domestic arrangements peculiar to the time; it is 33 feet in height, with an embattled parapet corbelled out at the angles, so as to form square bartizans: the walls are 4 feet in thickness and on one side is a small projecting garderobe, also carried on corbels: this tower was originally the residence of the rector, and afterwards of the vicars of Corbridge, but has been used as a prison. Near the village and about half-a-mile west was the Roman station Corstopitum. The Roman road called Watling street, which passes through this parish, was examined at a point here about 1865, and found to be a paved thoroughfare, convex in form, but without kerb stones; the north abutment of the bridge was also discovered to be much decayed: in the interior of the Roman station a semicircular apartment was uncovered, surrounded by a kind of bench. Near the church was the Roman cemetery, in which urns and bones have been found, as well as a headstone inscribed to a child named Julia Materna by her father Julius Marcellinus. On the south-east side of Corbridge common is Temperley Grange, the property and residence of Nicholas Temperley esq.; in 1850 the land was a mere waste, but by careful cultivation has been made a model farm. A court leet and a court baron were held till 1869 at Easter, at the Angel inn, before the representative of the Duke of Northumberland K.G. who is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are W. C. B. Beaumont esq. J.P. Nicholas Temperley esq. Henry Straker esq. Major John Coppin Straker J.P. and Joseph Straker esq. The area of the township is 4,925 acres of land and 83 of water; rateable value, £12,942; the population in 1891 was 1,649.

National School (mixed), built in 1855, for 310 children; average attendance, 225.
