Historical Description

ELLINGHAM is a township, parish and village, 2 miles south from Chathill station on the main line of the North Eastern railway from Newcastle to Berwick, 8 north from Alnwick and 6 south-east from Belford. The parish, which is 5 ½ miles long and 5 broad, is in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, south division of Bamburgh ward, Bamburgh petty sessional division, unions of Alnwick and Belford, rural deanery of Bamburgh, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Maurice is a cruciform building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and ft central embattled tower containing one bell: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1697. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £286, net yearly value £242, including 169 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1880 by the Rev. William Wilson, hon. M.A. of Durham University. Ellingham Hall is a large stone building situated in a secluded spot in the village and the seat of Sir John de Marie Haggerstone bart. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner: attached to the hall is the Catholic chapel, an ancient edifice of stone dedicated to St. Mary. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and potatoes. The acreage is 3,050; rateable value, £2,214; the population of the township in 1891 was 251.
