Historical Description

Elsdon, a village of great antiquity, supposed to have been a Roman town in the time of M. Aurelius Antoninus. Two Roman altars, with inscriptions, were found here in a hill, called the Mote Hill; one of them inscribed to the titular deity, Motunus. This hill is trenched round ten yards deep, to the north of which is a breast work lor its defence. Jaw bones of beasts, a large stag’s head, and a small urn, with ashes of burnt bones in it, were dug up by the late Mr. Warburton, and some imperfect Roman altars observed by him about the hill. It has been both sepulchral and exploratory.

On a green hillock, on a moor called the Todd Law, a little to the north of this village, are three large stones in a triangular order, twelve feet distance from each other, and each as many feet in diameter, said to have been sepulchral monuments of the Danes. The village of Elsdon has a fair on the 26th of August; and had formerly a market, but which has lately been discontinued.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ELSDON is an extensive parish, township and village, pleasantly seated on the road from Jedburgh to Morpeth and on the north side of the river Reed, 7 miles north from Knowes Gate station on the Morpeth branch of the North British railway, 29 north-west from Newcastle, 20 west-north-west from Morpeth and 10 north-east from Bellingham. The parish is inclosed on the north and south by hills of considerable elevation, and is 26 miles long and from 6 to 12 miles broad, in the Hexham division of the county, Bellingham petty sessional division, Rothbury and Bellingham union and county court districts, rural deanery of Rothbury, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Cuthbert is a cruciform edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, with vestry and hearse house on the north, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, both with very narrow western aisles, south porch and a western bell-cote with pyramidal termination, containing one bell: the chancel has three sedilia under plain pointed arches and there are a number of ancient carved tomb slabs: the communion plate dates from 1618: the church was repaired in 1836, and thoroughly restored in £1877, at a cost of about £1,200, and has sittings for 230 persons. The register dates from the year 1672. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge commuted at £750 yearly, average £571, net yearly value £518, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence (Elsdon Castle), in the gift of the Duke of Northumberland K.G. and held since 1884 by the Rev. William Henry Bradley M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and J.P. The yearly charities are the Martin dole of £1 4s. and £10 (the remains of £40), left by will of John Hedley, the interest of which is divided every Easter Tuesday. A short distance north of the church is the ancient castle of Elsdon, now the rectory house, supposed to have been built in the reign of Henry III. and at all events existing in 1436: it includes a huge square embattled tower, with a tall gabled roof, and bears on its south side the sculptured arms of Umfraville and on the north the arms of Howard: the walls are 9 feet thick and contain at one point a newel staircase leading to the roof: on the first floor is the drawing-room, 27 by 15 feet. The Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor. Thomas Gow esq. J.P. of Woodhill, Otterburn, William Orde esq. J.P. of Grindon, Norham-on-Tweed, and Robert Thornton esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are oats and barley and some land in pasture. The area of the township (which is in Rothbury union) is 6,489 acres; rateable value, £2,774: the population in 1891 was 193.
