Historical Description
Ford, situated on an eminence on the east side of the river Till. It consists of one irregular street, on the north side of which stands the castle, the seat of Lord Delaval; from the battlements of this castle is a variety of fine views, particularly one of the winding course of the river below, the bridge over it, and the improvements made on its banks, the neighbouring plain, the inclosures, tillage, and plantations on several little eminences; the whole terminated by several ranges of the neighbouring hills and mountains, on the tops of which are various ancient karns and entrenchments.
At Broom-ridge, in the same parish, and a mile south from the village, are the lines and entrenchments of that brave monarch, King Athelstan, who obtained a complete victory over the confederate forces of Constantine, king of Scotland, Eugenius, king of Cumberland, and Anlaf the Dane, in the year 928. In this battle King Athelstan lost his two near kinsmen Elwin and Ethelstan, both remarkable for their valour. Constantine escaped into Scotland, and Anlof to Dublin.
FORD is a township and parish on the river Till, which is crossed by a good stone bridge of three arches about half a mile from the village, miles east from Coldstream station on the Kelso branch of the North Eastern railway, 12 miles south from Berwick-upon-Tweed and 9 north-by-west from Wooler, in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, east division of Glendale ward, Glendale petty sessional division and union, Wooler county court district, rural deanery of Norham, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Michael, originally built in the early part of the 13th century, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, with vestry and organ chamber, nave of three bays, with aisles, and a western turret, 60 feet in height, containing one bell: the chancel has two modern sedilia and two ancient chairs, all of oak: at the east end of the south aisle was a chantry, probably dedicated to St. Margaret, of which the piscina remains: the east window is stained: in the south aisle were originally interred Lt.-Gen. Lord Frederick Fitzclarence G.C.H. d. 30 Oct. 1854, and his only daughter, Augusta, d. 18 Oct. 1855, and two windows were erected to their memory by Lady Augusta Fitzclarence, but on the death of Lady Augusta, 28 July, 1876, the bodies of her husband and daughter were removed to the mortuary chapel at Etal church: in the church are other memorial windows to James Grey esq. of Kimmerston, Sarah Knight, the Rev. Delaval Knight B.A. Lieut.-Gen. Sir Henry Askew K.C.B. Capt. G. C. Askew R.N. G. C. H. Askew, G. C. Carpenter, G. Culley and the Rev. Thomas Knight, late rector, and inscribed tablets to the Askew and other families: the stone font, a modern work in the Early English style, was executed by one of the villagers of Etal: in 1892 a beautiful reredos of Caen stone, in the style of the latter part of the 14th century, from a design by Mr. W. S. Hicks, architect, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, was erected to Louisa, late Marchioness of Waterford, d. 1891, by 162 of her friends, at a cost of £277, and on the north wall is an inscription recording the erection: the church was restored in 1852-3 at a cost of £1,300, when the north aisle with its arcading was added, and the porch erected: the vestry and organ chamber were built in 1870 by the Rev. Thomas Knight M.A. late rector, at a cost of £600, which sum had been subscribed and presented to him by the parishioners in recognition of the 50th year of his rectorship: the tower was carefully repaired in 1884: there are 400 sittings. The churchyard contains many ancient grave covers, some of which were discovered embedded in the wall during the repairs of the church in 1852; one of the slabs has carved on it a representation of the Northumberland bagpipes: in the churchyard is also a beautiful memorial, placed over the grave of the late Marchioness of Waterford by her nearest relatives and friends, the design of which was in part furnished by G. F. Watts esq. R.A. it consists of a very large cross of grey stone bearing an inscription and at the head are two angels holding a lozenge-shaped shield, with the arms of Beresford. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1683, and of marriages from 1684, The living is a rectory, average tithe Tent-charge £1,084, net yearly value £960, including 15 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Waterford, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Hastings Mackelcan Neville B.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. In the village is a lending library of 500 volumes. Some coal mines here, the property of the Marquess of Waterford, are worked, and give employment to a few hands. Flodden Hill, the site of the camp of James IV. of Scotland, on the day before the celebrated battle, fought 9 Sept. 1513, is in this parish; and on the south-east side of the hill are remains of entrenchments thrown up by the Scottish army in the expectation of the approach of the English from that direction; the engagement, however, took place at the foot of Branxton Hill, in the parish of that name, which see. Ford Castle, the property and occasional residence of the Marquess of Waterford, is beautifully seated on an eminence to the west of the village; it was originally built in 1287 by Sir William Heron, and crenellated in 1337-8 by Act of Parliament; in 1385 it was taken and destroyed by the Scots, but previous to the battle of Flodden Field had been restored by the Herons, and was captured before the encounter, according to tradition, by James IV.; in 1549, being again attacked by the Scots, the garrison retreated to one of the towers, under the command of Thomas Carr, who has married Elizabeth, grand-daughter of Sir William Heron, a descendant of the founder: in 1557 the ownership of the castle was hotly disputed between George Carr, his successor, and George Heron, and in the conflict which ensued, the mayor and treasurer of Berwick, who had become involved in the feud, were both slain; from the Carr family the castle descended by marriage to the Delavals, of Seaton Delaval, Mary, daughter and heir of Sir Francis Blake kt. of Coggs, Oxon, and grand-daughter of Thomas Carr, having married Edward Delaval, grandfather of John, 1st Baron Delaval, on whose death, in May, 1808, this estate descended to his grand-daughter, Lady Susanna Carpenter, only daughter and heir of George, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnel, and wife of Henry, and Marquess of Waterford K.P.: the castle was much altered in 1761-4 by Lord Delaval, and ornamented in a Debased Gothic style, but this work was removed and the fabric carefully restored in 1861-3, in accordance with the ancient portion of the structure, by Louisa Ann, late Marohioness of Waterford (d. 1891); the buildings, which include two towers of the original castle of 1287, surround a courtyard, entered by a gateway: a bedroom in one of the towers is said to be that occupied by James IV.: in the various apartments are many pictures and portraits of great value; outside the S. W. corner of the castle court is the ruin of a large tower called the priests’ tower, for a long period the residence of the rectors of Ford. The Marquess of Waterford, who is lord of the manor, James Laing esq. J.P. and Watson Askew-Robertson esq. D.L., J.P. of Ladykirk, Berwickshire, are the principal landowners. The soil is various, being loamy, clayey and sand. The chief crops are barley, oats and turnips. The area is 11,621 acres of land and 106 of water; rateable value, £13,471; the population in 1891 was 1,435.
National School (mixed), built in 1860, for 180 children; average attendance, 78; running round the schoolroom is a deep arcaded frieze painted by the late Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford, with a series of scriptural subjects with corn & flowers on the spandrels, & texts as labels; at each end pf the room is a subject covering the whole space.
