Historical Description

GREYSTEAD is a village and parish, comprising the townships of Chirdon and Smalesmouth, on the south side of the river North Tyne, and in a moorish and mountainous district, which abounds with fish and game; it is 20 miles north-west from Hexham and 6 miles west-by-north from Bellingham; the nearest railway station is Tarset, about 1 ¾ miles east from the parish church, but on Tuesdays the first train east and the mid-day train north-west stop at Thorneyburn station, about half a mile distant, both stations being on the section of the North British railway extending from Riccarton Junction to Hexham and Morpeth: a foot suspension bridge, erected by subscription in 1854 at a cost of £170, crosses the North Tyne and connects Greystead with Thorneyburn; the parish is about 14 miles in length and 4 ½ in breadth, and extends between Chirdonburn, Clintburn and Smalesburn, and from the south side of the North Tyne to the borders of Cumberland, in the Hexham division of the county, north-west division of Tindale ward, Bellingham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bellingham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. The church, on the south side of the North Tyne, and on the main road to Falstone and Kielder, is a plain building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of nave, south porch and a low embattled western tower, containing one bell: the church was restored and reseated in 1879, and has 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1818. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £114, net yearly value £132, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Bartholomew Ring LL.D, of Trinity College, Dublin. The chief landowners are Sir John de Marie Haggerstone bart. of Ellingham Hall, Chathill; William Oswald Charlton esq. J.P. of Hesleyside, Bellingham; H. G. Clayton esq. of The Chesters, Hexham; the Rev. James Allgood M.A. of Nunwick Hall, Humshaugh; Richard Thompson, Thomas Spencer esq. The Grove, Ryton, and Thomas Dixon esq. Low Fields. The area is 20,026 acres; rateable value, £3,487; the population in 1891 was 205.
