Historical Description
INGRAM is a township and extensive parish, 3 miles west from Hedgeley station on the Alnwick and Coldstream branch of the North Eastern railway, 9 south from Wooler and 13 west from Alnwick, in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, north division of Coquetdale ward, Glendale union, Wooler county court district, North Coquetdale petty sessional division, rural deanery of Rothbury, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The river Breamish passes through the parish, and is crossed at Ingram by a fine iron girder bridge of two spans, erected in 1893, at a cost of about £1,500. The church of St. Michael is a small but ancient building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, small vestry, south porch and a western tower supported by a strong buttress containing one bell: in 1837 the roof was lowered, and the aisles taken away, but the latter were rebuilt in 1879, when the church was restored and a new east window erected: the font, dating from 1662, has a five-pointed star and a crescent carved upon it: there are 90 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £225, gross yearly value £400, net £367, including 93 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. James Allgood M.A. and held since 1887 by the Rev. Thomas Ilderton M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, and honorary canon of Newcastle. Capt. Roddam John Roddam B.A., J.P. the Duke of Northumberland K.G. C. Wealleans esq. and Major William James Joicey J.P., D.L. of Sunningdale Park, Berks, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are barley, oats and turnips. The area of Ingram, Linhope, Hartside and Greenside township is 6,523 acres; rateable value, £2,269; the population in 1891 was 82.
At Linhope, to the west of Ingram, at a point near which the Linhope and Breamish streams unite, is a camp situated at a height of 1,164 feet above the sea level, and surrounded by two ramparts, the outer 10 feet and the inner 5 feet thick; within the inclosed area, to which there are four entrances, are a great number of hut circles: in June, 1861, the site was excavated at the cost of the late Duke of Northumberland. About 200 yards east of this camp is another group of dwellings, and 300 yards north-west, on the side of a hill, another stronghold with dwellings.
