Historical Description
LAMBLEY is a small parish, 4 ½ miles south-by-south-west from Haltwhistle and 8 ½ north-by-west from Alston, in Cumberland, comprising the joint townships or manors of Lambley and Asholme, and several scattered farms lying on both sides of the South Tyne, which passes through the parish; within a short distance are Lambley and Coanwood stations on the Alston and Haltwhistle branch of the North Eastern railway, which here crosses the river by a viaduct, upwards of 100 feet in height, with nine main arches of 66 feet span, and seven of 20 feet span each: the parish is in the Hexham division of the county, west division of Tindale ward and Haltwhistle petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hexham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. Mary and Patrick, standing on an eminence, was rebuilt in 1885, on the site of an older structure, at a cost of £1,600, and is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, north vestry and a western turret, containing one bell, presented by Miss Allgood, of Hexham: the old sanctus bell which formerly belonged to the Benedictine convent, suppressed at the Dissolution, has been removed to the east end of the nave: in the porch is a stoup: there are 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1744. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £21; net yearly value £31, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. James Allgood M.A. of Nunwick Hall, and held since 1866 by the Rev Arthur Chichele Chambre Vaughan M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, who also perpetual curate of Greenhead. Divine service is conducted fortnightly in the Colliery school at Herdley bank, Coanwood, by the Rev. A. C. C. Vaughan M.A. There is a reading room supplied with the local papers and magazines, and containing a library of about 500 volumes. Here was formerly a Benedictine nunnery, dedicated to St. Patrick, and founded in the time of King John, by Adam de Tynedale; at the Dissolution there were six nuns, and revenues valued at £5. The principal landowners are the Rev. James Allgood M.A. of Nunwick Hall, Simonburn, who is lord of the manor, J. G. F. Hope-Wallace esq. J.P. of Featherstone Castle, Haltwhistle, T. and H. Whitfield and John Dickinson esq. The soil is sandy and clay; subsoil, mixed. The chief crops are oats and turnips. The area is 3,001 acres of land and 39 of water; rateable value, £3,781; the population in 1891 was 692.
Colliery School, Herdley Bank, Coanwood (mixed), for the parish of Lambley, built in 1863 by the Coanwood Coal Co. by whom it is principally supported, for 160 children; average attendance, 125.
