Historical Description

LOWICK is a parish and township: the village consists of one long and irregular street of detached houses, many of which are thatched and present a humble appearance, and is 4 miles south-west from Beal station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 9 south from Berwick, 10 north-west from Belford and 8 north from Wooler; it is in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, Northern division of the ward of Glendale, Glendale petty sessional division and union, Wooler county court district, rural deanery of Norham, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. John the Baptist, standing on an eminence, and rebuilt about 1790, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing 3 bells: in the nave is a memorial to the Knight Gregson family: there are also three memorial windows to the Sitwell family: the church was restored and a chancel and vestry built in 1887, and now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1720. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Thomas Forster Dodd M.A. of University College, Durham. There is a Catholic church, erected in 1854, and dedicated to St. Edward. The Presbyterian chapel, in connection with the Free Church of Scotland, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, rebuilt in 1856; there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. There are charities of £4 yearly value. Coalpits and stone quarries abound here; lime is also burnt in the neighbourhood. The carboniferous limestone is rich in fossil remains, a very large and rare collection of which was made by the Rev. G. Jenkin-son, sometime incumbent of this parish, and by him presented to Professor Sedgwick, for the Woodwardian Museum, Cambridge. Sir John de Marie Haggerstone bart. of Ellingham Hall, Chathill, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is of a clayey loamy nature; the subsoil, strong clay. The chief produce is wheat, oats, peas, beans and turnips. The area is 12,864 acres; rateable value, £9,737; the population in 1891 was 1,310.
