Historical Description

MELDON is a township and parish, on the river Wansbeck, with a station on the Wansbeck section of the North British railway, 6 miles west from Morpeth and 17 north from Newcastle-on-Tyne, in the Wansbeck division of the county, Morpeth ward, Morpeth petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Morpeth, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. John, founded by Roger Bertram, of Mitford, in the 13th century, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry on the north side and a western turret containing 2 bells: the chancel is divided from the nave by a fine oak screen: the east window is stained and contains figures of St. John the Evangelist, St. Cuthbert and St. Oswald, and in other windows are shields of arms of the different families by whom the manor has been held, including the shield of Cambois: on the south side of the church is a tomb, with recumbent effigy, to Sir William Fenwick kt. ob. 1652, about whose mother, Margaret (Selby), commonly known as “Meg of Meldon,” there are various strange local legends: the church was repaired in 1733 at the cost of the trustees of Lord Crewe’s charity and others, and restored in 1849 by Isaac Cookson esq. then lord of the manor, and the Rev. James Raine, the eminent antiquary and sometime rector here: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1706. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Richard Joseph Hepple L.Th, of University Gollege, Durham. Meldon Park, 1,000 acres in extent, is the residence of John Blencowe Cookson esq. J.P. who is also the proprietor of an extra-parochial district of 750 acres, the residents on which attend Meldon church; and is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The kennels of the Morpeth foxhounds are in this parish; John B. Cookson esq, master. Morpeth and Newcastle-on-Tyne are convenient places for hunting visitors. The soil is alluvial; the subsoil clay. The chief crops are grain and turnips. The area of the township is 1,019 acres; rateable value, £1,417; the population in 1891 was 149.

National School (mixed), built in 1872, for 60 children; average attendance, 26; supported chiefly by J. Blencowe Cookson esq. & the rector.
