Historical Description

OVINGHAM is a township, parish and village, on the north bank of the river Tyne, 11 miles west from Newcastle-on-Tyne and 10 east from Hexham, in the Hexham division of the county, east division of Tindale ward, Tynedale petty sessional division, Hexham and Castle Ward unions, Hexham county court district, rural deanery of Corbridge, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. Prudhoe station on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway is a quarter of a mile south on the opposite bank of the river, over which there is an iron bridge. The village is well supplied with water. The church of St. Mary is a cruciform building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transepts, porch and a low tower of massive masonry, with belfry windows of coupled lights, divided by rude balusters, and containing 3 bells: the chancel retains two sedilia of early date, with trefoiled heads and modern shafts, and has a low side window: here also lie two altar stones, and several inscribed floor slabs, including one with arms and crest and a singular eulogistic epitaph to William Ovrd esq. ob. 27 April, 1630, and Ann his daughter, ob. 2 Dec. 1631; and others to the Addison family, and the Blacketts of Wylam: the transepts, which have western aisles, exhibit some good corbels, with the nail head ornament, and in the south transept is a piscina: both the chancel and transepts are lighted by tall narrow lancets, the east end having a triplet; in the porch is a grave slab bearing a cross: the tower is possibly Saxon: the church was restored in 1857, when the destroyed north aisle was rebuilt and the blocked arcade reopened: there are 500 sittings. In the churchyard are the graves of Thomas Bewick, the celebrated wood engraver, d. Nov. 8, 1828, his wife and his brother John, also an engraver, d. 1795. The register dates from the year 1679. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of Edward E. Bigge esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Charles Ernest Havelock Donnell B.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The ancient rectory house once formed a part of a convent of Austin Canons, founded by one of the Umphravilles of Prudhoe, as a cell to the priory of Hexham; at its dissolution there were three canons, and revenues valued at £11: the existing building still shows some remains of early date, including a Decorated window of two trefoiled lights: the kitchen retains a noble fireplace, and in one of the upper rooms is a rich moulded cornice with “I. M.” and over the south door is the date 1692 and the letters “I. A." for one of the Addison family. A cemetery of two acres was formed in 1879, at a cost of £1,500: it has two mortuary chapels, and is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. Near the steps leading from the rectory garden to the river, are inscribed atones, marking the height of the flood, 17 Nov. 1771 and 31 Dec. 1815. There are charities of the annual value of £11 for distribution in money. Fairs were held on the 26th of April and the 26th of October, but are now discontinued. In the village is a modern cross, marking the site of the old toll-booth; the head is a copy of that of a former cross. The Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. who is lord of the manor, Edward Ellison Bigge esq. of 18 Onslow square, London, S.W. William Bedlington esq. and Alexander Wood esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, with some land in pasture. The area of the township is 522 acres of land and 33 of water; rateable value, £1,592; the population in 1891 was 328.

National Schools (mixed), for 75 children; average attendance, 56.

Rudchester township, formerly in this parish, was in 1892 transferred to Heddon.
