Historical Description

Simonburn, a village situated on a rising ground, by the side of a pleasant brook, from which, and the dedication of the church to St. Simon, it takes its name. It is remarkable for being the largest parish in the diocese, extending northward from Chollerford Bridge, to Liddesdale in Scotland, an extent of 32 miles. In the year 1762, in digging a grave in a pew under one of the windows of the church here, a very remarkable skull was turned up with the spade; on the back part of it was the figure of a large scollop-shell; and at one of the auditories, of a torcular shell like a screw.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SIMONBURN is a township, village and parish, on the North Tyne river, 4 miles from Chollerford station on the North British railway, 9 north from Hexham, 8 south from Bellingham and 29 west from Newcastle, in the Hexham division of the county, north-west division of Tindale ward, Tynedale petty sessional division, Hexham union and county court district, rural deanery of Bellingham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. The church, formerly dedicated to St. Simon, but recently re-named St. Mungo’s, was till 1815 the parish church of the whole of Tynedale; it was rebuilt in 1860 under the direction of Mr. Anthony Salvin, architect, and restored in 1877 at a cost of £3,400, and now consists of chancel, nave and aisles; the chancel, which is of unusual length, retains a curious double piscina, a priest’s doorway of the Decorated period and a low side window: in the nave are monumental effigies of Cuthbert Ridley, rector 1604-36, and three members of his family, and a monument of white marble to Mr. and Mrs. Allgood of Nunwich; the stained east window is a memorial to Meyriek Henry Legge Beebee, and there are several others to the Allgood and Rogers families; the church affords 222 sittings. The churchyard is entered by a beautiful lych gate, erected in 1886 at a cost of £216, as a memorial to Lancelot J. H. Allgood esq. by his kindred tenants and friends; in the churchyard are two sycamom trees of great size. The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £540, subject to a payment of £120 to the incumbent of Humshaugh, net yearly value £310, including 76 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Greenwich Hospital, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Percy Rogers M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge, honorary canon of Durham, rural dean of Bellingham and surrogate. About half a mile north of the church are the remains of Simonburn Castle, an ancient seat of the Heron family, but now only a picturesque ruin in Border times it was a place of great importance as the residence of the warden of Tynedale. In 1766 the west tower was rebuilt and part of the north wall still remains. In the wooded gorge of Tecket, about a mile west of the village, is a fine waterfall, and a curious grotto, where, according to tradition, John Wallis, the author of the “Natural History and Antiquities of Northumberland” and sometime curate of the parish, wrote this work: he died in 1793. The ancient holy well of St. Mungo, to whom it is supposed the church was dedicated, lies in the rector’s dene. At Carrawborough, in this parish, is the site of the Roman station, Procolitia, and in December, 1876, at a point about 100 yards south of the Roman wall, several underground structures, originally built as wells, were discovered, and in these were found a great variety of articles, dating in part from A.D. 140, and including an enormous quantity of Roman coins, 24 inscribed altars, vases, beads, brooches, two very curious inscribed earthenware cups, a sculptured stone with three figures of Naiads, seated under arches, and a votive tablet with an inscription, and above it, in low relief, the figure of a goddess, floating on a water lily and holding a branch, and conjectured to represent Coventina, the tutelary deity of the wells; most of these relics are preserved in the museum at Chesters. The farm of Tecket is held in trust by the rector and 7 other trustees under the will of Giles Heron, who died in 1685 and is buried in the chancel; this charity, the yearly value of which is now (1894) £170, is in part applied to the maintenance of a school in Wark, and the rest is assigned to the poor inhabitants of the old parish of Simonburn, and is given in doles on Good Friday and at Martinmas. There is also a charity founded by Mrs. Evans, widow of the Rev. David Evans, rector of Simonburn, who died in 1829, the proceeds of which are appropriated to an almshouse in Humshaugh for aged women, and for doles to the sick of the parish. Nunwick Hall, the seat of the Rev. James Allgood M.A. is an elegant structure of white freestone, situated on a spacious lawn, half a mile from the village. Park End is the residence of Thomas Ridley esq. J.P.; the manorial rights pertaining to the ancient lands in Simonburn are vested in the owners. The Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor of that part of Bradpool common, in Simonburn parish, which pertains to the manor of Wark. The Rev. James Allgood M.A. and Thomas Ridley esq. are the chief landowners. The area is 9,394 acres of land and 65 of water; rateable value, £5,643; the population in 1891 was 413.

National School (mixed), for 80 children; average attendance, 40.
