Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STANNINGTON is a township and parish, on the river Blyth and on the road from Morpeth to Newcastle, 1 ½ miles south from Stannington station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 283 miles from London, 4 south from Morpeth, and 10 north from Newcastle. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1871 upon the site of an older structure, which dated from 1190, but removed in consequence of its dilapidated condition, is a building of Bassington dressed stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower 80 feet high, containing 1 bell: the stained east window was erected by the children of Sir Matthew White Ridley, 4th baronet, d. 2 Sept. 1877, in memory of their parents: the stained west window was presented by the family of Capt. Gregg Carr: the interior of the chancel is surrounded by an Early English arcading on marble shafts: the piers of the chancel arch are also of marble: there are sittings for 350 persons. A very beautiful lych gate was erected by the Right Hon. Sir Matthew White Ridley bart. P.C., M.P., D.L., J.P. in 1893, from a design by W. S. Hicks esq. of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Sir Matthew White Ridley has also placed in the churchyard, over the Blagdon vault, a fine cross, 10 feet in height, with the motto of the Ridley family, “Constans Fidei,” engraved on the base. The register dates from the year 1658. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £259, net yearly value £266, including 20 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Newcastle, and held since 1867 by the Rev. Ambrose Jones M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are charities £11 yearly value. The Right Hon. Sir Matthew White Ridley bart. P.C., M.P., D.L., J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner, a small portion belonging to Capt. Gregg Carr. The soil is generally poor, but well tilled, and consists of clay, sand and loam; the subsoil is sandstone and clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area is 19,272 acres of land and 44 of water; rateable value, £14,296 10s.; the population in 1891 was 1,019, including 244 in the North Eastern Reformatory for boys.
