Historical Description

WARK is an extensive parish formed in 1886 under the Divided Parishes Act and including High Shitlington, Low Shitlington, Wark and Warksburn, formerly separate townships, in the Hexham division of the county, Tindale ward petty sessional division, union and county court district of Bellingham, rural deanery of Bellingham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. Wark village is on the west bank of the North Tyne, with a station on the Hexham and Riccarton section of the North British Railway, 12 miles north-by-west from Hexham and 5 ¼ south-east from Bellingham; the North Tyne is here crossed by a bridge connecting the parish of Wark with that of Chollerton, originally a wooden structure, supported by eight massive stone pillars; in September 1878, the wood portion was entirely removed and iron substituted, and the bridge considerably widened, at a cost of £1,600. The church of St. Michael, erected in 1814-18, by the Governors of Greenwich Hospital, at a cost, including the rectory house, of £7,410, is a plain edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of quasi-chancel, nave and an embattled western tower containing one bell: it was reseated with open benches, re-decorated throughout, and a new oak pulpit and lectern introduced in 1883-4 at a cost of £550, raised by subscription: the chancel was restored, and a stained east window and reredos erected at the same time, at the expense of Mrs. Taylor, of Chipchase Castle; the stone font, a memorial to the Rev. Hugh Taylor M.A. some time curate in charge here, who died April 9th, 1883, was presented by Miss Taylor of Humshaugh; in the vestry is a Sunday School library of 200 volumes: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1818. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £250, net yearly value £230, including 9 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lords of the Admiralty, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Robert O’Donelan Ross-Lewin M.A. of Durham University. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. The Presbyterian church and manse were built in 1875, at the sole expense of George Barclay Bruce esq. of London, on a site given by Hugh Taylor esq., J.P. of Chipchase Castle; the church is a building of stone, surmounted by a turret containing one bell, and has three stained windows and sittings for 190 persons. The Wark Mechanics’ Institute, presented to the town by Hugh Taylor esq. of Chipchase Castle, in 1875, at a cost of nearly £2,000, is a fine building of stone, surmounted by a turret containing an illuminated clock; and contains a reading room and library of over 600 volumes, club room, and a lecture hall holding 250 persons. A flower show is held here annually in September. The poor share the charities of the parish of Simonsburn, and the interest on £500 Consols left by Thomas Charlton of North Shields, in 1883, to the most deserving poor of the parish, without distinction of creed. In this parish are traces of various encampments. Raven’s Crag is a steep range of rocks, at the southern extremity of the parish, the west end of which is a fine spring, overshadowed by a natural arch. Near the village of Wark and above the bank of the river is an eminence called "Moat Hill,” formerly crowned by a tower, belonging to the Radcliffe family; the site is now occupied by a farmhouse. Near Kirkfield, half a mile north, are the ruins of an ancient church, apparently of considerable extent. The Duke, of Northumberland K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor; Rev James Allgood M.A. of Nunwick Hall; Thomas Ridley esq. J.P. of Parkend, W. O. Charlton esq. J.P. of Hesley side, Bellingham, Thomas Taylor esq. J.P. Chipchase Castle, Nathaniel George Clayton esq. J.P. of the Chesters, Warden, and the trustees of the late Sir John Massey Errington bart. are the chief landowners. The chief crops are oats, turnips and seeds, and some land in pasture. The area of the parish is 23,176 acres, a great portion of which is fell land, and 94 of water; rateable value, £8,357; the population in 1891 was 731.

Roses Bowes is a farm occupying a romantic situation on the brink of lofty rocks, in the vicinity of which the river Wark forms a cascade: in this neighbourhood is a mineral spring, called “Holy Well,” possessing curative properties.

National (mixed), founded under the will of Giles Heron, 1679, with other charities; the income, now amounting to £150 yearly, is derived from rents: the old schoolroom, with master’s residence, erected by the Governors of Greenwich Hospital & the trustees of Heron’s Charity, was rebuilt in 1879, & will hold 200 children; average attendance, 90.

National, Crookbank, erected in 1876, for 30 children; average attendance, 22; is supported by a voluntary rate.
