Historical Description
Wooler, a market town, situated about 300 miles from London, near the river Till, in an ill- cultivated country and under the influence of those vast mountains called the Cheviot hills, which renders it subject to impetuous rains. The town contains several streets, and is much resorted to in summer by invalids for the benefit of goats’ milk and whey. The church stands on an eminence, and is a modern building, the ancient one having been on the opposite side of the river. Its market is on Thursday, and its fairs on the 4th of May, and 17th of October. The market-place is in the centre of the town; which consists, according to the late returns, of 285 houses, and 1679 inhabitants, viz. 801 males and 878 females, of whom 318 were returned as being employed in trade and manufacture.
On a round hill near the town are the ruins of an old tower, near which was formerly an hospital dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen.
WOOLER is a small town, parish and head of a county court district, seated on an eminence about 6 miles from the foot of Cheviot, 16 ½ miles south of Berwick, 18 miles north-west from Alnwick and 316 from London, with a station on the Alnwick and Cornhill section of the North Eastern railway, in the Berwick-upon-Tweed division of the county, Glendale ward, petty sessional division and union, rural deanery of Bamburgh, archdeaconry of Lindisfarne and diocese of Newcastle; the town is approached from the Newcastle and Edinburgh Road by a substantial bridge of four aches over the Wooler water, and is lighted with gas from works erected in 1847, at a cost of £1,500, by a company, and supplied with water by two companies. The scenery in this neighbourhood is very picturesque, the hills and glens affording ample study for the artist; the prominent portions are the celebrated range of the Cheviot hills, Humbleton, Hedgehope, the Newtons, East and West, and the Beamish Head hills, the source of the Till, which runs near Wooler, wending its way north-west and terminating at confluence with the Tweed; the neighbouring hills and moors feed large flocks of sheep. The parish church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1765, near the site of an older building, and enlarged in 1835, is a plain edifice of stone, consisting of nave, vestry, west gallery, and an embattled western tower containing a clock, erected in 1856, and 1 bell: the stained east window was the gift of the late Miss Haigh in 1835, and there is a memorial tablet to the Rev. William Haigh M.A. vicar of the parish for 31 years: the church affords 520 sittings. The mother church of Wooler is supposed to have been at Fenton, which is now included in Doddington parish, where the graveyard still remains. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a vicarage, the tithes commuted at £404; average, £307; net yearly value, £420, including 59 acres of glebe, with residence, in the patronage of the Bishop of Newcastle, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Joseph Samuel Wilsden M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, and hon. canon of Newcastle and surrogate. The Free Kirk, erected, with minister's residence attached, in 1818 at a cost of about £1,200, has 700 sittings. The United Presbyterian chapel will seat 800 persons; there is also a second Presbyterian chapel, seating 400 persons; and an English Presbyterian chapel, affording 500 sittings.
