The town of Arnold is 4 miles north from Nottingham, and was governed by a Local Board from 1854 until, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act,” 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), an Urban District Council was established. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with some traces of Norman work, and is believed to have been first built about 1176, the existing nave and chancel being erected in 1320 and the tower in 1450: the church now consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with pinnacles, containing 4 bells and a clock: the chancel retains its sedilia, a double-basined piscina in the south wall, and an Easter sepulchre in the north wall: on the north side of the church, near the entrance to the chancel, stands the tomb of the founder of the church: the east and west windows are stained and there is another on the south side: the stair to the rood loft remains, though now concealed: a baptistery was erected and a new font provided in 1898; the nave was restored in 1868 and the chancel in 1877 by private contributions: there are 400 sittings. The registers date from the year 1544, and are in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net income £305, including 68 acres of glebe, in the gift of Col. Sir C. There is a Baptist chapel in Front street, built in 1822 with 200 sittings, a Congregational erected in 1871 seating 170, and the Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists and Salvation Army have each a chapel here. The Methodist New Connexion Chapel, erected in 1866, will seat 600 persons; a public clock was placed in the building in 1867. The cemetery was formed in 1877 at a cost, of £3,500, and contains about four acres, and has two mortuary chapels; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. The offices of the Urban District. Council, built in 1875, stand in the centre of the village, and comprise boardroom, pay-room and fire-engine house, with a weighing machine. The various charities of the parish were reconstituted by the Charity Commissioners in 1886, and placed under the control of a body of 10 trustees, of whom the Archdeacon of Nottingham, the vicar, the two churchwardens of the mother church, i.e. Arnold, the chairman and vice-chairman of the Education Committee, and the chairman of the Urban District Council are ex-officio, Col. Sir Charles Seely bart. and Messrs. J. R. Allen and J. Acton being elected trustees; the charities are distributed by them in money or kind, or as scholarships in accordance with the scheme of the Commissioners. The inhabitants are largely engaged in the lace and hosiery trades. There is also a large brewery, a laundry, and soap works have lately been established.
