Historical Description
Averham, a village pleasantly situated on the river Trent. Here is the seat of the family of the Suttons, of whom Robert was created Lord Lexington, 21 Charles the First, and was succeeded in the year 1668, by his son, Robert, with whom the title expired. He left a daughter, Bridget, his heir, who married John, late Duke of Rutland, whose second and third sons both possessed this estate, and assumed the surname of Sutton; Lord George the latter died seized thereof in the year 1783. Sir William Sutton who died in the year 1611, has a monument here.
Kelham Hall, a little to the north , was the seat of the late lord George Sutton, a younger son of John Manners, Duke of Rutland, who inherited it, Averham, and other considerable estates in this county, from his mother the heir of Robert Sutton, Lord Lexington. It is a fine modern seat, on the banks of the Trent, but lies low, and is now in the possession of George Sutton, Esq.
AVERHAM is a parish and village, 3 miles north-east from Fiskerton station on the Nottingham and Lincoln branch of the Midland railway, 3 west from Newark, and 127 from London, in the Newark division of the county, northern division of the wapentake of Thurgarton, Southwell union, petty sessional division and county court district of Newark, rural deanery of Newark, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The navigable river Trent and the Midland railway pass through the parish. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Early English and Geometric styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western embattled tower with pinnacles and containing 6 bells, dating from 1840, and a clock; in the chancel are some fine monuments of the Sutton family and one to Lord Lexington, 1668; on the north side of the communion table is an altar tomb with full-length figures of Sir William Sutton, in armour, and his lady (1607); at the western extremity of the nave lies a very ancient recumbent figure, supposed to represent a warrior of the time of King John; another and similar figure in the south wall of the nave, dated 1307, and in good preservation, is assumed to commemorate one of the Suttons; the chancel has a piscina, at the back of which is an antique carving of a cross patee, and in the churchyard is an ancient tombstone with a floriated cross of 14th century work; the east window is stained, and there is a memorial window erected by the rector to his wife; the church was repewed and otherwise restored in 1858; further repairs were executed in 1865, when the building was reroofed at the expense of the rector; in 1875 a vestry was built by Sir Richard Sutton bart.; a new organ was presented in 1902 by the Rev. Joseph Cyril Walker M.A. curate, in commemoration of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1537 and of marriages and burials from 1540. The living is a rectory, with that of Kelham annexed, joint net yearly value £778, with residence and including 169 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Col. John Henry Manners-Sutton, and held since 1856 by the Rev. Joseph Walker M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Jn. Hy. Evelyn Manners-Sutton esq. of Kelham Hall, is lord of the manor and owner of the land. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, principally gravel. The crops are chiefly cereals and roots. The area is 2,119 acres of land and 50 of water; rateable value, £3,155; the population in 1901 was 130 in the civil and 428 in the ecclesiastical parish.
