Historical Description
BLYTH, anciently Blia or Blida, is an extensive parish and township, 6 miles north-east-by-north from Worksop, 3 miles from Ranskill station on the Retford and Doncaster section of the Great Northern railway, 4 south-west-by-south from Bawtry, and 144 from London, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, Hatfield division of the wapentake of Bassetlaw, unions of Worksop and East Retford, Retford petty sessional division, county court district of Worksop, rural deanery of Worksop, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The town, seated on the river Ryton, had formerly a market, and was on the high road from London to York; but the market was, many years since, removed to Bawtry, in Yorkshire. The church of SS. Mary and Martin, standing on an elevated site, is a stone building mostly of Norman date, with later additions, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a fine embattled western tower, with pinnacles at the angles, containing a clock and six bells, recast about 1841: the south aisle has a very perfect screen separating it from the chancel: there are memorial windows to Mrs. Sewel, General. Simpson and Mrs. Walker, erected by Mrs. Weldon; one to Mr. George Mellish, placed by his mother; and another to Mrs. Mellish, erected by A. Mellish esq. and the Misses Mellish: at the east end of the nave, which has a stone groined roof in the Early Pointed style and formed part of the ancient priory church, are the remains of a wall painting of the 15th century: in the north aisle is the recumbent effigy of Edward Mellish esq. with shields bearing the arms and quarterings of that family, A.D.1690, and among other monuments one erected to the late Sir George Mellish, Lord Justice of Appeal., who died in London, 15 June, 1877: the church was well restored in 1885 at a cost of £3,544, and in 1899 was fitted with the electric light, at the cost of F. Willey esq. of Blyth Hall: it now affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net income £345, including 156 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Masters and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Elliott Scott-Moncrieff M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a place of worship. The charities amount to £26 yearly, besides two almshouses and dwellings for six poor persons. There is a reading room with a library of about 800 volumes. Fairs for horses and cattle are held on Holy Thursday and Oct. 20th. The Benedictine priory of St. Mary here was founded by Roger de Builly and Muriel his wife about 1088, and was in some degree subject to the abbey of the Holy Trinity at Rouen, in Normandy; at the time of its surrender its yearly revenue was valued, according to Speed, at £126 8s. 2 ¼d. Blyth Hall, a handsome mansion of brick with stone dressings, in the Tudor style, surrounded by well-wooded pleasure grounds and commanding extensive views, is the seat of Major Francis Willey J.P. Nicholas Henry Bacon esq. of Raveningham Hall, Norfolk, Thomas Walter Bacon esq. of Ramsden Hall, Epex, and Richard Castell Bacon esq. of Gainsborough, are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,320 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £2,759; the population of the township of Blyth in 1901 was 571, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,739.
