Barnby-moor-with-Bilby History

BARNBY-MOOR-WITH-BILBY forms a township, in the parish of Blyth, in East Retford union, 3 miles west-by-north from Retford, 3 east-by-south from Blyth, and is near Sutton station on the Great Northern railway. Bilby is a small hamlet of scattered houses, standing on the banks of the river Ryton, nearly 2 miles south-west from Barnby-Moor. The Church House, at Barnby-Moor, is licensed for divine worship; services being conducted by the Blyth clergy: part of the building is also used as a reading room. The principal landowners are Charles H. Lowe, Lieut.-Col. Henry Denison, of Eaton Hall, and the Duke of Newcastle. The Right Hon. Francis John Savile Foljambe P.C. of Osberton Hall, is lord of this manor. Fleecethorpe is near Bilby. The area is 1,977 acres of land and 5 of water; assessable value, £1,404; and 213 inhabitants in 1901.

The children here attend the Public Elementary School at Torworth.
