Hodsock History
HODSOCK is a lordship of scattered houses, on the borders of Yorkshire, in the parish of Blyth and Worksop union, but distant from the village 2 miles west from Blyth. Hodsock Priory, the seat of Henry Mellish esq. J.P. is a mansion of red brick, in the Elizabethan style, pleasantly seated amid gardens and pleasure grounds and commanding a fine view over very picturesque scenery. Hermiston Hall is a modern stone mansion in the Tudor style, situated in a park near the village of Oldcotes, and is the seat of John Gerard Riddell esq. Henry Mellish esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Right Hon. Francis John Savile Foljambe P.C. John Gerard Riddell esq. Col. Sir Thomas Woollaston White bart. of Wallingwells, the trustees of the late Rev. H. Gladwyn Jebb M.A. (d.1898) and Henry Mellish esq. The area is 4,211 acres of land, chiefly arable, and 25 of water; rateable value, £3,925; the population in 1901 was 227.
