Historical Description
BOLE is a parish and small village, on the navigable river Trent, which here separates this county from that of Lincoln, 2 miles north-east from Sturton station, between Retford and Gainsborough, on the main line of the Great Central (M. S. & L.) railway, 7 north-east from East Retford, 2 south-west from Gainsborough, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, North Clay division of the Bassetlaw wapentake, petty sessional division of Retford, union of Gainsborough and county court district of Gainsborough, rural deanery of Retford, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Martin is a stone edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the pulpit, representing within panelled work the history of Haman, was constructed from ancient carved oak, presented by the late Sir C. H. J. Anderson bart. of Lea Hall (d.1891), and brought by him from Holland: the church plate consists of chalice, 1 paten and a flagon, all of silver: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1813 only; the earlier records have been stolen. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Saundby, net yearly value £161, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishops of Southwell and Manchester alternately, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Thomas Holland Chadwick M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. There is a charity of £7 5s. yearly derived from land in the parish, and distributed to the poor every Christmas, 5s. of this sum being paid by C. E. de More Thorold esq. of Welham. Lord Middleton is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, principally red clay. The crops are chiefly cereals; there is much land in grass for grazing purposes. The parish contains 1,334 acres of land, 3 of water, 22 of tidal water and 5 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,830; the population in 1901 was 142.
