Historical Description
CARBURTON is a small village, township, and chapelry, on the river Poulter and the Flood Dyke, 4 miles south-east from Worksop station, on the Retford and Sheffield section of the Great Central railway, in the parish of Edwinstowe, Bassetlaw division of the county, Hatfield division of the wapentake of Bassetlaw, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Worksop, rural deanery of Worksop, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The chapel is a very small but ancient building of stone, believed to date from the Saxon period, and consisting of chancel and nave, with a bell turret at the western end containing one bell: the chancel has three stained windows, erected by F. J. S. Foljambe esq. to his late wife: there are 60 sittings. The register dates from the year 1528. The living is a chapelry, annexed to Edwinstowe, joint net yearly value £386, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Manvers, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Henry Telford Hayman M. A. of Corpus: Christi College, Cambridge, who is also incumbent of Perlethorpe. This was a Roman settlement. The Duke of Portland is lord of the manor and owns the whole of the land, with the exception of a few acres belonging to the Duke of Newcastle and inclosed in Clumber Park; the majority of the inhabitants are in the employment of the Duke of Portland. The land is wooded. The soil is light; subsoil, rock and clay. The area is 2,242 acres of land and 34 of water rateable value, £1,594; the population in 1901 was 148.
