Historical Description

CARLTON-IN-LINDRICK is a large parish, 8 ½ miles south-by-west from Bawtry and 3 ½ from Worksop station on the Great Central (late M. S. & L. ) railway, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, extending to the borders of Yorkshire, and in Hatfield division of the wapentake of Bassetlaw, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Worksop, rural deanery of Worksop, archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of South-well. It consists of North and South Carlton, three-quarters of a mile from each other. By Local Government Board Order North Moor was, in 1885, transferred from Wallingwells to Carlton-in-Lindrick, and in 1882, by the Divided Parishes Act, The Grange and Red Barn and Birch Hills were transferred from Carlton to Wallingwells. The church of St. John the Evangelist is a building of stone in the Early Norman, Transitional and later styles, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and a lofty embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a fine clock, presented by the late Robert Ramsden esq. and 3 bells, one dated 1732, another, the largest, 1623, and the smallest dates from about 1430; the west doorway, removed to its present position from another part of the church, is Norman, with chevron ornament, while the east window belongs to very late Perpendicular, and contains some fragments of old stained glass: the body of the church and the tower have been raised and strengthened with buttresses; a south aisle was added in 1832, and the whole edifice is now surrounded with a battlemented parapet: on the timbers of the nave roof are the arms of the Fitzhughs, formerly lords of the manor, and also of the Dacres; this roof and that of the north aisle date from the 15th century; there are several monumental tablets to members of the family of Ramsden, an older one (dated 1745) to Evelyn Chadwick and a small stained window in the chancel to the late Robert Ramsden esq.; the church plate dates from 1656; there are 395 sittings, 256 being free: the churchyard has been twice enlarged. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £450, including 524 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Joseph Foxley M. A. and late fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge: The Wesleyan Methodists have a place of worship at North Carlton and the Plymouth Brethren a meeting room, and a small cemetery. Carlton Hall, the property of Robert Charles Plumtre Ramsden esq. lord of the manor, is a large and handsome mansion in the Classic style with beautiful grounds, and is now occupied by Harrison Smith esq. The principal land owners are Robert Charles Plumtre Ramsden esq. Col. Sir Thomas Wollaston White bart. J.P. of Wallingwells, the Right Hon. Francis John Savile Foljambe P. C. of Osberton Hall, and John Gerrard Riddell esq. of Hermeston Hall, Rotherham. The soil is sand and limestone; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 4,033 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £4,953; the population in 1901 was 969 in the civil and 948 in the ecclesiastical parish.
