Historical Description
COLWICK is a parish on the north bank of the Trent, with a station on the Grantham and Nottingham branch of the Great Northern line, 125 miles from London and 2 east from Nottingham, in the Rushcliffe division of the county, northern division of the wapentake of Thurgarton, Nottingham petty sessional division and county court district, Basford union, rural deanery of Gedling, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. John the Baptist is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, situated on the lawn contiguous to the Hall, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, in good repair, and containing one bell: it contains many ancient monuments of the Byron and Musters families, including one to Sophia Catherine Musters (who died in 1819), on the north side of the chancel window, and another to Mary Chaworth, afterwards Musters, Lord Byron’s first love: the east window is stained: there are 100 sittings. The register, which dates from the year 1569 for all entries, is on parchment and in fair condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 19 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Horatio David Davies K C. M. G ., M. P. and held since 1902 by the Rev. William Bannington Curran M. A. of Queen’s University, Ontario. The Nottingham and Colwick Park Race Course, which comprises a straight course of a mile in length, has been laid out by a private company. Colwick Hall, now an hotel, is an elegant mansion, pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Trent, about 1 ½ miles from Nottingham, in a park of 70 acres, containing a lake nearly 20 acres in extent, and there are also splendid gardens, lawns, walks and woods; the building suffered much during the Reform Riots of 1831. Lt.-Col. Sir Horatio David Davies K. C. M. G ., M. P. of 23 Great St. Helen’s e c, is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil on the north side is stoney clay, and produces good corn; that on the low ground is principally grazing land. The area is 1,270 acres of land and 70 of water; rateable value, £10,989; the population in 1901 was 899.
