Historical Description
COTHAM is a parish and small village on the river Devon and extending to Lincolnshire, with a station a mile and a quarter from the village on the Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, and Newark section of the Great Northern railway, 4 miles south from Newark and 118 from London, in the Newark division of the county, wapentake, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Newark, and in the rural deanery of Newark, archdeaconry of Nottingham, and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Michael is a small stone fabric in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave and aisle, south porch and oak bell turret, containing 2 bells, formerly hung inside the church: the centre of the east window is stained and there are two others, one being on the south side of the nave: projecting from the north wall, inside the church, is a stone mural tablet of the Markham family, dated 1601, with eight figures sculptured thereon in a kneeling posture: a new belfry was erected in 1890 and the church reseated at the cost of the Duke of Portland: there are 120 sittings. The register, which is in fair condition, dates from about the year 1581. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £47, including 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Portland, who is also impropriator, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Andrew Ping B. A. of Oxford University, who is also rector of, and resides at, Thorpe-by-Newark. The Duke of Portland K.G., P. C ., G. C. V. O. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, limestone. The crops are wheat and other cereals; root crops are also grown. The area is 1,350 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £1,552; the population in 1901 was 113.
