Historical Description

EDINGLEY is a pleasant village and parish, near the river Greet, on the road between Southwell and Mansfield, with a station called Kirklington and Edingley on the Mansfield and Newark line of the Midland railway, one mile north-west from the village, 8 miles east-south-east from the latter and 3 ½ west-north-west from the former and 131 ½ from London, in the Newark division of the county, petty sessional division, union and liberty of Southwell, county court district of Newark, wapentake of Thurgarton, rural deanery of Southwell, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. By Local Government Board Order, a detached part of Edingley was transferred to Oxton. The church of St. Giles is a stone building of very early date, consisting of chancel and nave, and a turret containing 2 bells, dated 1811: there is a piscina and a Norman font: the church has been restored under the care of Hodgson Fowler esq. architect. The register dates from the year 1581. The living is a vicarage with that of Halam annexed, joint net yearly value £300, including 47 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishops of Manchester and Ripon alternately, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Robert Frederick Smith M. A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who is also minor canon of Southwell Cathedral, and surrogate, and resides at Southwell. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1838, was re-seated and a new porch added in 1898, and affords sittings for 80 persons. The charities amount to £7 8s. yearly. The Manor House is an old building, now occupied as a farmhouse. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are W. H. Wilson esq. of Hexgrave Park, Col. Edward Strelley Pegge-Burnell, of Winkburn Hall and Lewis Randle Starkey esq. of Norwood Park, Southwell. The land is partly arable and partly pasture, with 8 acres of wood and 20 of orchard. The area is 1,755 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £2,817; the population in 1901 was 250.

Public Elementary School, partly endowed, built for 30 children; average attendance, 21.
