Historical Description
EPPERSTONE is a township, village and parish, in the vale of Dover Beck, 2 miles north-west from Lowdham station on the Nottingham and Lincoln line of the Midland railway, 7 south-west from Southwell and 9 north-north-east from Nottingham, in the Newark division of the county, southern division of the wapentake of Thurgarton, union of Southwell, Nottingham petty sessional division, county court district of Newark, rural deanery of Gedling, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of the Holy Cross is a stone building of the Early English period, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory on south side, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with spire, containing a clock and 3 bells, dated 1589: there is a memorial window to Annie Rebecca, wife of William Clarke (1878), and another to Frances Anne, wife of the late Rev. M. H. S. Champneys, rector of this parish (1882), a brass to some members of the family of Seaton (1729), mural monuments to John Odingsells (1655), William Seaton, of Epperstone (1655), another of this name (1744), and to Elizabeth Hill, daughter of the Rev. R. Seaton (1756), besides memorials to Robert Squire (1701), Rev. Thomas White (1857), Sidney Jenour (1825), and to the late T. Huskinson esq.; there is a Norman font and a communion table of wood and marble: the church was restored in 1853, when the western gallery was removed, the tower arch renewed, the west window filled with stained glass at the cost of Henry Houldsworth esq. and the chancel arch repaired at the expense of the rector: the church was restored and re-seated in oak in 1879, when an oak lectern was presented by T. Dufty esq. and other gifts have been made to the church by the Misses Clarke, Miss Arkell, the Misses Champneys and the rector, and Mrs. Collins: there are 200 sittings, 52 being free. The register dates from the year 1582 for all entries, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, which, with the exception of a small wood tithe, is entirely derived from 266 acres of glebe; it is in the gift of the Hulme trustees, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Thomas Farmer Collins M. A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There is a chapel for Wesleyans. The poor have the rents of three tenements, yearly value £18, left by Mary Leake and others. The village library was founded in 1839, by John Litchfield esq. and contains 4,000 volumes. The Manor House, a fine residence, standing on an eminence, in a park of 70 acres, has been partially rebuilt, and is now occupied by Francis Ley esq. J.P. The principal landed proprietors are Francis Ley esq. who is lord of the manor, W. L. Huskinson esq. Commander William Sherbrooke R. N. of Oxton Hall, F. L. Ward esq. Thomas Isaac Birkin esq. of Ruddington Grange, the rector, the Messrs, Platts and Mrs. Dufty. The soil is clay; the land, pasture and arable. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 2,500 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £3,309; the population in 1901 was 362. Half a mile south is a paper mill.
Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1855, for 120 children; average attendance, about 52.
