Historical Description

FINNINGLEY is a township and parish, comprising the township of Finningley, Notts, and Awkley (or Auckley), principally in Yorkshire, and Blaxton, Yorkshire, and has a station on the Great Northern railway, 7 miles south-east from Doncaster and 4 north-east-by-north from Bawtry, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, wapentake of Bassetlaw, Doncaster union and county court district, petty sessional division of Retford, rural deanery of Bawtry, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, with an arcade of three arches, south porch and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles at the angles and containing 3 bells, two of which are dated 1621 and 1700: the very ancient south entrance, the font and the small splayed lights in the belfry tower and south wall as far as the chancel formed part of the earlier church: the north aisle and chancel are Early English and Decorated: the tower has a fine Norman arch: in the church is a wooden tablet to the memory of William Salmon, 1694, and several tablets to the Harvey family: the church plate consists of a silver flagon and cup and a ciborium: in 1884—5 the church was completely restored, re-floored, new roofed and reseated at a cost of £1,358: the porch was built in 1885 by Mrs. Howey and Miss Oldfield at a cost of £60, to the memory of their aunt, Mrs. Mary Ann Oldfield, of the Lawns, Bawtry; in the porch are six very old tombstones: the church affords 200 sittings: the churchyard has been enlarged by the addition of a portion of the glebe, presented by the rector, who also erected a lych gate as a memorial of his mother. The addition to the churchyard was consecrated, and the lych gate dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell, March 26th, 1892. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, including 711 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Thomas Hewitt and William Taylor Hewitt esqrs. and held since 1887 by the Rev. Nettleton Balme Whitby, of Jesus College, Cambridge. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists, built in 1838. Finningley Park, which is in Yorkshire, is the residence of Parker Rhodes esq.; the mansion is a fine building, about a mile from the village, standing on an elevation in the midst of a thickly-wooded park. The trustees of the late Thomas Hewitt are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The township of Finningley contains 2,397 acres; rateable value, £3,256; and in 1901 there were 352 inhabitants in the township and 745 in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1855, for 110 children; average attendance, 105; endowed with £20 yearly by John Harvey esq. & supported in part by the trustees of the late Thomas Hewitt.
