Awkley History

AWKLEY is a township and village in the parish of Finningley (Notts), about 5 miles south-east from Doncaster and 2 from the Finningley station, in the southern division of the Riding, soke, union and county court district of Doncaster, partly in the county of Nottingham and partly in Yorkshire. Here is a chapel of ease attached to the church of St. Oswald at Finningley. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. John W. Childers esq. and William Cadman esq. are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is sand and peat; subsoil sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, rye and turnips. The entire area is 1,900 acres; rateable value £3,162; and the population in 1871 was 330, viz. 169 in West Riding of Yorkshire and 161 in Notts.

Finningley (with the exception of the township of Blaxton and a part of the township of Awkley) is in Nottinghamshire.
