Historical Description
Halam, at the court-leet of which all its freeholders and copyholders are to appear twice a year, to do suit and service.
HALAM is a parish and village, seated in a hollow, on the high road from Southwell station to Mansfield, 1 ½ miles west from Southwell station on the Mansfield and Newark branch of the Midland railway, and 10 south-east from Mansfield, in the Newark division of the county, wapentake of Thurgarton, liberty, petty sessional division and union of Southwell, county court district of Newark, rural deanery of Southwell, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle (built about 1884), north porch and a low western tower with four pinnacles, containing a clock and 2 bells, dated 1722: the east window, with two others are memorials to William Flint esq. of Halam House, and there is another on the north side of the chancel, of the 15th century: there are tablets to Sophia Frances, mother of Sir Richard Sutton, of Norwood Park (1844), and Mary Emily, his daughter, wife of Lord A. E. Hill (1850), and to Thomas Wright, of Upton Hall (1845), as well as inscribed flagstones to “Enry Lascoe,” ob.13 June, 1689, and William Lascoe gent. (1703), and Ann, his wife (1713): the church was restored during the period 1884—9, at a cost of £1,600, and affords 179 sittings. The register (of parchment) dates from 1560 if or all entries, but is partly illegible till 1600, and between 1709—24 is imperfect. The living is a vicarage, annexed in 1884 to that of Edingley, joint net yearly value £300, including 44 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishops of Manchester and Ripon alternately, and held since 1861 by the Rev. Robert Frederick Smith M. A. of Lincoln College, Oxford, who is also minor canon of Southwell Cathedral and surrogate, and resides at Vicar’s Court, Southwell. The Wesleyan chapel, with Sunday school attached, was erected here in 1896, at a cost of £380, and has sittings for 80 persons. The charities consist of £200 4s. Consols, bequeathed in 1771 by Mary Sturtevant of Newark, a moiety of which is applied to the repairs of the inside of the church, or if there be a surplus, to the National school, the other moiety being given to the poor; likewise a close, left in 1686, by John and Walter Benson, yeomen of Halam, which is let out for gardens and the proceeds given to the poor at Christmas; and the interest of £25, left in 1849 by the late William Rogers, of Armley, near Leeds, to be distributed in coals to the poor at Christmas; there is also a sum of £200, left by the late William Flint esq. of Halam House, in 1869, and made available for the parish in 1877, the interest of which is to be distributed to the poor at the discretion of the churchwardens; and a further sum of £100, left by the same gentleman at the same time, the interest to be appropriated to repairing and beautifying the chancel. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Lewis Randle Starkey esq. of Norwood Park, Southwell; Colonel Edward Strelley Pegge-Burnell, of Winkburn Hall, Winkburn, and Beauchief Hall, Derbyshire. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots; the pasture is rich, good land. There are several acres of orchard in the parish. The acreage is 1,623; rateable value, £3,108; the population in 1901 was 255.
