Historical Description

The village of Harworth, where an hospital was founded by Robert Moreton, for a chapel and poor people, before the year 1316, which yet exists, under the patronage of the archbishop.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HARWORTH is an extensive parish, on the borders of Yorkshire, 2 ½ miles south-by-west from Bawtry station and 2 ½ west from Scrooby station, both on the main line of the Great Northern railway, and 9 north from Worksop, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, wapentake of Bassetlaw, Hatfield division, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Worksop, rural deanery of Bawtry, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of all Saints is an edifice of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a tower with 8 pinnacles containing 6 bells, rehung in 1893: there are mural tablets to Mrs. Mary Saunderson, foundress of a Free school in this parish (1772), and to the Rev. Joshua Waddington, a former vicar (1780): the chancel retains its sedilia: the church was rebuilt (with the exception of the tower) in 1869, and transepts, vestry and organ chamber were added by public subscription, to which Joseph Whitaker esq. gave £500; the cost was £1,800: in February, 1886, a new pulpit, reading-desk and seat, of carved oak and stone, were erected in memory of Joseph Whitaker, by his son, Benjamin Ingham Whitaker: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, including 89 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Benjamin Ingham Whitaker esq. and held since 1904 by the Rev. Frederic d'Arblay Burney M. A. of Keble College, Oxford. The hospital of St. Mary Magdalen was founded previous to 1316, by Robert Moreton esq “for an ecclesiastic master and certain poor people,” who in 1635 consisted of two poor widows only, having between them 40s. yearly, the master receiving £14 10s. yearly: the chapel of this hospital was the burying place of the family of the founder: the endowment now amounts to about £120 yearly: Mr. Greaves, of Hesley Hall, restored the chapel in 1839 at his own expense and his son now contributes £120 yearly; the chaplaincy and mastership has been held since 1900 by the Rev. Henry Kendall. About 2 miles south of the village stands Serlby Hall, the seat of Viscount Galway (in the peerage of Ireland, but sitting as Baron Monckton of Serlby in that of the United Kingdom), and lord of the manor; the mansion is in the Grecian-Doric style, with a noble entrance porch, and contains some fine pictures in the hall, including examples by Vandyke, Holbein, Gainsborough and other masters: it is surrounded by woods, and situated in the centre of an extensive park, with fine oak and beech trees; the river Ryton flows through the park, near which, in a wood, are some ruins. Connected with the Hall is a chapel, to which a chancel was added in 1886: the interior is wainscotted with old carved oak: service is held here every Sunday by the Rev. C. E. Scott-Moncrieff M. A. vicar of Blyth, who is chaplain to Viscount Galway. At Serlby are the kennels of Viscount Galway’s foxhounds, of which Viscount Galway is master and owner; the pack hunts four times a week, and Retford, Worksop and Bawtry are convenient places for hunting visitors. The principal landowners are Viscount Galway and Benjamin Ingham Whitaker esq. D. L ., J.P. of Hesley Hall, Rotherham. The soil is chiefly sandy; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 4,513 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £6,560; the population in 1901 was 554 and of the ecclesiastical parish 845.
