Oldcotes History

OLDCOTES is 2 ½ miles south-west-by-south from Harworth, on the road from Worksop to Doncaster. John Gerard Riddel esq. of Hermiston Hall, Oldcotes, is lord of the manor and landowner. Messrs. R. Cooper and John Sidwell, and several smaller freeholders own the land. Divine service is conducted every Sunday afternoon in the public elementary school room by the vicar of Harworth. A Catholic church, dedicated to St. Helen and presbytery were erected in 1871, by E. Chaloner esq. and endowed by him with £100 yearly; Rev. Jos. Stourton, priest. There is also a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1840.

STYRRUP-WITH-OLDCOTES (or Alcoates) forms a township, partly in the parish of Blyth, but chiefly in that of Harworth.
