Historical Description

The church at Hoveringham, a village a little to the north-west of Flintham, has a Saxon porch, with a curious bas-relief of St. Michael, the patron of the chapel, and the dragon, now nearly hidden by a modern brick buttress built to support that side of the church; and a monument for Sir Robert Gousill, Knt. sometime lord of this town, and Elizabeth his wife, daughter and coheir of Thomas Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, and relict of Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, on which is their effigies cumbent, curiously carved in marble.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HOVERINGHAM is a village and parish, 1 ½ miles east from Lowdham and 1 south from Thurgarton stations on the Nottingham and Lincoln line of the Midland railway, 5 south from Southwell and 10 north-east from Nottingham, in the Newark division of the county, Thurgarton wapentake, union and petty sessional division of Southwell, county court district of Newark, rural deanery of Southwell, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. This village is near the river Trent, over which there is a ferry to Kneeton. The church of St. Michael is a small building of brick, in the Early English style, erected in 1865, and consisting of chancel and nave, north porch and one bell in a bell-cote on the western gable: the church occupies the site of an ancient edifice, of which some remains exist in carvings, representing St. Michael encountering the dragon, with vested figures of SS. Peter and Paul, on the tympanum of a Norman doorway: there is a fine altar-tomb to Sir Nicholas Goushill (1393): the ancient font, some time lying at the Ferry inn, was restored to the church in 1897: there are 200 sittings. The earliest dates of the parish register are baptisms, 1553; marriages, 1560; burials, 1567, and these records are in bad condition through injury by floods. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Thurgarton, joint net yearly value £118, with residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Atwell Mervyn Yates Baylay M. A. of that college, who resides at Thurgarton. Here is a chapel for Dissenters of all denominations. A cemetery of half an acre was formed in 1882, at a cost of £125. Hoveringham Hall is the seat of Joseph Nall esq. and commands extensive and pleasing views of the Kneeton hills. The principal landowners are Trinity College, Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, and Sir Richard Vincent Sutton bart. of Benham Park, Newbury, Berks. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 900 acres of land and 34 of water; rateable value, £2,015; the population in 1901 was 311.

Church, erected in 1850, for boys and girls, but now used only as a Sunday school & private day school.

Public Elementary (mixed), built in 1875, and holding 80 children; average attendance, 45.
