Historical Description

LOWDHAM is a parish and township on the Cocker Beck and Dover Beck, tributaries to the Trent, and has a station on the Nottingham and Lincoln line of the Midland railway, 137 ½ miles from London, 6 south-south-west from Southwell and 8 north-east from Nottingham, in the Newark division of the county, southern division of the wapentake of Thurgarton, Nottingham petty sessional division, Southwell union, Newark county court district, rural deanery of Gedling, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of South-well. The church of St. Mary is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with small spire and containing 5 bells: there is a monument in the chancel to Sir John de Lowdham (1319), with an inscription in Norman-French, and in the chancel one to an ecclesiastic, which formerly had an inscription on brass: the chancel was restored in 1895 by Earl Manvers: there are 410 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559 for baptisms and burials, and 1564 for marriages, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £155, including 106 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Manvers, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Cecil Ernest Alford. Earl Manvers is also lay impropriator. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel in the village. Bricks are made here, and many of the people are employed in framework knitting. Earl Manvers, E. O. Manners esq. Col. Storey & John Liell Francklin esq. of Gonalston Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and roots. The area of the township is 1,687 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £5,147; the population in 1901 was 942.

By Local Government Board Order No.40,034, dated September 12, 1899, a part Of Gunthorpe civil parish was annexed to Lowdham.

Tan Yard is a place in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), built by subscription, aided by a grant from the National Society, in 1843, for 200 children; average attendance, 120.
