Historical Description
MISSON is a parish, 3 miles east-north-east from Bawtry station on the main line of the Great Northern railway, 12 north from Retford and 12 south-east-by-south from Doncaster, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, wapentake of Bassetlaw, Hatfield division, Doncaster union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bawtry, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The eastern side of the parish is in the county of Lincoln and hundred of Corringham, for which part there are several lords of manors. The parish is bounded on the east and south by the navigable river Idle. The church of St. John the Baptist is an embattled building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and western tower with crocketed pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1882 the gallery and organ were removed and the church restored at a cost of £110 and a further restoration was effected in 1886 and the tower arch opened out, at a cost of £400: the stained east window was inserted by the daughters of the late Rev. W. Thorpe, a former vicar, at their own expense: in 1894 the church was struck by lightning, the tower being much damaged, the clock destroyed, and the bells partly melted and broken: the fabric has since been thoroughly restored, and the bells recast and rehung, organ repaired and enlarged and new clock supplied at a cost of about £1,500. There are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, including 293 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Frank William Keene. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Some land has been laid out as a cemetery, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The parish has an institute and reading room and there are charities of the annual value of £1 15s. for the poor; 20s. yearly was also left by Mr. Wood, payable from Deep Hole field, for educating the children in the parish, and the parochial school is endowed with 32 acres of land. The Embankment inclosure trust of 43 acres, producing about £15 yearly, is for the repair of bridges and drains. A large portion of land in this parish is very low and has many large open drains cut through it. J. Hett esq. of Brigg, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Messrs. Samuel Wood Law, Robert Law, George Brooke, Joseph Skelton, William Sutcliffe and James Wilson. The soil is sand, clay and peat; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 6,142 acres of land and 39 of water; rateable value, £7,437; the population in 1901 was 607.
Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1860, for 120 children; average attendance, 80; & is endowed with 32 acres of land.
