Historical Description
Scrooby is a village situated at the northern part of the county, on leaving which we proceed southerly, and at the distance of about two miles we pass through the village of Ranskill, one mile and a half to the north-east of which is Mattersey or Mersey, where was a priory of Gilbertines, founded by Roger de Maresay, before the year 1192; granted by Henry VIII. to Anthony Neville. At the dissolution its annual revenues amounted to 1301. 13s. but the building has been long since totally demolished.
One mile and a half to the west of Ranskill, is Blythe, a place of great antiquity, and was formerly a noted market town, and had a strong fortified castle, which has long since been destroyed.
In the reign of King John a monastery was founded in this town for monks of the Benedictine order. In latter times it received considerable benefactions, and at its dissolution the annual revenues were valued at 126l. Besides this there were several other religious houses in this town; but not any remains of either are now to be seen. At present the only building in this town that merits particular notice is the church, which is a spacious and handsome Gothic structure. About one mile to the north of Blythe is Serlby Hall, a seat of the Earl of Galloway.
SCROOBY is a parish and village on the Great North road, with a station on the main line of the Great Northern railway, 146 miles from London, 8 north-by-west from Retford and 1 ½ miles south from Bawtry, in the Bassetlaw division of the county, Bassetlaw wapentake, Hatfield division, Southwell liberty, East Retford petty sessional division, union and county court district of Retford, rural deanery of Retford, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The rivers Idle and Ryton bound the parish on the north-east and west sides. The church of St. Wilfred is an ancient embattled building of stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, with a tower, surmounted by four pinnacles and a lofty octagonal spire and containing 3 bells, dated 1695: in the year 1817 the spire was struck by lightning and received considerable damage, and in 1831 was again struck, but not so much injured: the church was restored in 1862 by public subscription; Miss Guriy, formerly a resident in Bawtry, gave the pulpit at her own expense: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Sutton-cum-Lound, joint net yearly value £195, including 33 acres of glebe here, in the gift of the Duke of Portland, and held since 1869 by the Rev. John Farmer M. A. of University College, Durham, who resides at Sutton-cum-Lound. The Wesleyan Methodists have a place of worship. Near to the village is the Manor House, which was formerly a palace, and a seat of Cardinal Wolsey, when Archbishop of York; it is now a farm house; several old carved oak beams still remain. The Archbishop of York is lord of the manor. Viscount Galway is the principal landowner. The soil is sand; subsoil, gravel. The area is 1,581 acres of land and 17 of water; assessable value, £5,209; the population in 1901 was 181.
The children of this place attend Bawtry & Haworth Public Elementary Schools.
