Historical Description

WIDMERPOOL is a small village and parish, with a station one mile from the village on the Nottingham and Melton Mowbray branch of the Midland railway, 9 miles south-east from Nottingham and 9 north-east from Loughborough, in the Rushcliffe division of the county, southern division of the wapentake of Rushcliffe, Nottingham petty sessional division, Bingham union and county court district, rural deanery of South Bingham, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Peter is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles; the spire was destroyed by lightning in 1832: there are 3 bells, two dated 1608 and the third dated 1709: the church was thoroughly restored in 1888, at a cost of £2,457, when considerable additions were made, the nave new-roofed, new carved oak reading desk and pulpit and organ erected and a stained west window inserted: in the south aisle is a tablet recording the restoration as a memorial to Andrew Low, by his daughter, Harriet Annie Robertson: during the period 1888—95 a new porch and chancel were erected, and extensive restoration effected, at a cost of £9,000, wholly defrayed by Major G. C. Robertson and his wife: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539, the early records being in good condition.

The living is a rectory, net yearly value £287, derived from 460 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Maj. George Coke Robertson, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Arthur Thorold Wood, of St. Bees. A village reading room was erected in 1889 at the sole expense of Mrs. G. C. Robertson. Widmerpool Hall, the seat of Major George Coke Robertson J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner, is a spacious mansion of Bath and Clipsham stone, with a clock tower and terraces at each end: the interior decorations are very elaborate: the grounds are tastefully laid out and kept in excellent order. The soil is heavy clay, with limestone underneath The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,106 acres; rateable value, £2,823; the population in 1901 was 158.

Crow Hill is half a mile north.
